Every step counts… #health #boomers #MFRWAuthor

September 2, 2017 by Adriana Kraft

Are you interested in your health? How much time do you spend thinking about it on a daily basis?

More important, how much time do you invest in doing something about it on a daily basis?

When I was in my twenties, I probably didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about it, though through a quirk of fate (friends in college in the 60s) I’d already developed a daily exercise program.

We got excited about the RCAF routine and got together in the dorm halls (not co-ed, in those days 😊) most evenings to run through the 10 minute routine. It stuck with me. I liked what it did for my body – probably more motivated by what I wanted to look like than health concerns in those days!

But as I’ve grown older (Baby Boomer, here), my health concerns and activities have increased. Though each of my parents lived a very long time (95 and 101), both developed forms of dementia late in life: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and needed care for her symptoms for her last five years, during most of which time she didn’t know who I was (or her husband, either). My dad’s was more classic age-related dementia, and he continued to know me (the “blue-eyed” daughter), remembered raunchy jokes from his youth, and kept his assisted living staff entertained and engaged by laughing with them often. If I have a choice, I’d prefer his trajectory.

Fast forward to today: Each time a new link surfaces with information about preventing Alzheimer’s and dementia, I’m all over it in a flash. Whatever my genes have in store for me down the road, it’s clear a great deal is within my control. At the very least, if this is my future, I can delay onset and significantly decrease symptoms through how I live on a daily basis. And even if my genes aren’t poised to take me there, I’ll experience vastly greater quality of life through my remaining years.

So I’m going to take up blogging about it again. If you’re interested in what I’ve had to say about it in the past, you can explore the Stay Sexy column we published in 2013 and 2014.

My new series of posts will have the somewhat broader focus of overall health, though of course you can count on us to never ignore sex 😊. I’ll share tips, new research, what has worked for both halves of Adriana Kraft, what hasn’t, and opportunities for guests who have a similar focus. Drop us a line (use the contact button in the r.h. sidebar) and tell us what you’d like to blog about as our guest.

For today, I’m sticking to counting steps. FitBit has sold millions of step counters with its campaign about the benefits of walking 10,000 steps a day. Is the hype true? The answer, in general, is yes. A 2017 HuffPo article supports the benefits, with some caveats that are worth noting: slow steps don’t have the same benefit as a faster pace, and there’s no magic threshold at 10,000. More is simply better.

After researching step-counters, I invested in a FitBit Charge 2 (Mr. Kraft gave it to me last Christmas, actually). I love it. I always know where I am relative to my goals. What I especially appreciate is being reminded to move – at least 250 steps – every hour. I spend much of my day sitting at the computer (imagine that!). Not moving, it turns out, can be lethal.

What’s more, I’ve discovered that the bottom threshold, for me, happens at about 8,000 steps. If I get less than that in a day, I feel more sluggish, less energized, and less alert the next day (and Mr. Kraft is far more likely to beat me at WordStreak). I’m on much more of an even keel if I’ve reached at least that much, though my goal continues to be more. Every step counts.

What works for you? We’d love to hear from you, in comments below or via our email contact on the sidebar.

I’m sure you play the captive role superbly… #MWTease #MFRWAuthor

August 30, 2017 by Adriana Kraft

Welcome to MidWeek Tease, where authors share tempting snippets to tide you over till the weekend. A huge shout out to author Angelica Dawson for hosting our blog hop every week!

So much seduction – sometimes in A Woman for Zachary, it’s difficult to discern who is seducing whom. In today’s excerpt, we drop in on Josie and Meg, but who is the pursuer? They’re at a cafe after rehearsal…

EXCERPT

Meg tingled as Josie’s dark eyes snapped at her. The taller woman’s long nose twitched and her broad mouth broke into a grin, suggesting that she enjoyed this stage of the game as much as Meg usually did. Still, Meg cautioned herself to tread carefully. She wasn’t accustomed to playing the role of being seduced. “So how long have you known Zach?”

Josie’s chin jerked up. Meg doubted the woman had been thinking about Zachary Cullen.

“Maybe ten years or so,” Josie said smoothly, showing no evidence of discomfort. “He sought me out after coming to a performance I directed. He’d heard on the street that I was particularly good with young talent and wanted to know if I’d help a young woman he’d discovered in Nebraska, I think.”

“So I’m not the first.” Meg scowled, hoping that wasn’t a look of sympathy crossing Josie’s face. “I didn’t expect I was,” she quickly added.

Josie shook her head. Her long flowing dark hair flipped from side to side. “You’re not the first, though you are only the third young girl he’s referred to me over that period. So there haven’t been hordes. Of course I don’t keep track of his activities. There may have been others he hasn’t brought to me, but I don’t know of any.”

“So what happens to these young women when Zach grows tired of them?” Meg’s fingers curled around a napkin, and she didn’t like the fact that she couldn’t keep the acid from her voice. She thought she was a better actress than that.

“Don’t get too upset with Zach. He doesn’t hold anyone captive.” Josie arched an eyebrow. “I’m sure you’re free to leave whenever you want to.”

“Of course I am.” Meg didn’t like Josie’s maternal tone. “When I ask Zach to tie me up, he only uses scarves.” Meg hid a smile when Josie’s eyes rounded and the woman involuntarily wet her lips. Maybe she’d remember why they were sharing a drink. It wasn’t for Josie to defend Zach.

Josie’s mouth turned up in a smile. “I’m sure you play the captive role superbly.”

It’s New York! Broadway beckons, but Meg has more fun keeping an erotic triangle going with her current flame, Zach Cullen, and her drama coach, Josie Patrice.

EXCERPT

The cowboy stepped closer. Cassie could make out a scowl. Dark eyes snapped a foreboding anger. Raven black hair framed chiseled features, searing them into Cassie’s brain. Her toes curled involuntarily. She rubbed Hope’s coat vigorously. Who the hell was he? And to top it off, he didn’t even seem to notice her. His eyes appraised only the horse.

High stakes, a fiery Irish redhead, her stunning racehorse, and a fiercely loyal rancher.

“But you’re not safe?” #MWTease #MFRWAuthor #Menage

August 16, 2017 by Adriana Kraft

Welcome to MidWeek Tease, where authors share tempting snippets to tide you over till the weekend. A huge shout out to author Angelica Dawson for hosting our blog hop every week!

Do you love New York? We do, though we don’t get there as often now that our son has moved to the West coast. To compensate, we gave our heroine, Meghan Keenan, his former Brooklyn walk-up apartment (over a laundromat, no less) in a marvelous culturally diverse funky neighborhood not far from the site of the old Brooklyn Dodgers stadium, long since transformed into an upscale shopping mall.

Today’s excerpt from our latest release, A Woman for Zachary, comes as our threesome takes a break from ice skating in Central park.

EXCERPT

The following Saturday, Meg sat on a warming bench next to Josie and they both watched Zach’s blue hooded jacket disappear in the crowd of skaters as he made his way to the men’s room. “Zach hasn’t lost the touch with ice skates,” Meg said. “He’s good on his feet.”

“Apparently he grew up skating the lakes and rivers near where you were raised,” Josie replied. “But you never knew him back there.”

“Nope. Of course, we were raised decades apart. I only met him when he came into the bank to make a deposit and we struck up a rather innocent conversation. Then he came to see me at the Community Playhouse.” She smiled at Josie. “And that was the beginning of what led me here, and to you.”

Josie clasped her gloved hand. “I’m glad Zach had the good sense to bring you to me.”

“Me, too.” Meg squeezed their fingers. “So why do you suppose Zach prefers young women?”

Josie’s mouth turned up into a broad smile. “That’s easy. Of course, I’ve had much longer to ponder that question than you have. Let’s give Zach credit, though. He is genuinely interested in trying to discover promising talent for the stage. That’s a passion for him that runs as deep as any other passion he might have.”

“Do you realize that if I ever say anything slightly critical about Zach, you rush to his defense?”

“I don’t.” Josie turned away to watch skaters making their way along on the ice. “You must be wrong.”

“I’m not, but I won’t debate that point. But you didn’t answer why he prefers girls to women his age.”

“Because girls are safer. You’re safe. Don’t get me wrong—Zach adores you. But he also knows you don’t see any kind of long-run future with him. He can have a good time with you, and you with him, without unwanted strings or expectations.”

“But you’re not safe?”

This time Josie held her gaze.

Meg couldn’t remember when she’d witnessed such sadness.

“No, I must be too old to be safe.” Josie shrugged. “That’s the way it is.”

It’s New York! Broadway beckons, but Meg has more fun keeping an erotic triangle going with her current flame, Zach Cullen, and her drama coach, Josie Patrice.

What telltale signs had he seen? #8Sunday #MFRWAuthor #Polyamory

August 13, 2017 by Adriana Kraft

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet of their writing on Sunday.  Be sure to visit other participants at http://www.wewriwa.com/  and read and comment on their #8sunday posts.

We’re continuing with a little backlist love. A few weeks ago we featured The Diary, which introduced Kate’s younger sister, Luci, as the diarist who sent her older sister on an erotic wild goose chase. Luci soon demanded her own story, and Writing Skin was the result.

Today’s ten sentences are taken from the erotic novel Luci writes during the book, “Watching.”

EXCERPT

Edie stared out the window of her north side apartment through the Monet raindrops trying to get her bearings. Her lover of three years had just told her that morning of a long held fantasy—he wanted to watch her make love to another woman.

Hugging herself, Edie thought she should be more shocked or offended. She’d never been with a woman. It wasn’t that she hadn’t thought about it or even had the opportunity; one of her best friends was bi and had talked openly about a liaison more than once, but she hadn’t been ready to take that leap.

How did Jake know she’d been having night time dreams about Angela lately? Had she talked in her sleep? Had he been watching her that closely? What telltale signs had he seen? More than one morning she’d awakened with aching, sticky loins

BLURB

What would it be like to be romanced by not one but two potential partners, simultaneously? Luci Parker has finally achieved the career of her dreams as an erotica author – but the only romance in her life these days is in the books she writes. Long attracted to both men and women, Luci despairs of ever finding just one person to settle down with.

Owners of a South Side Chicago bookstore, Chai and Frank Ferguson eagerly devour Luci’s books as fast as she can write them, and now they wonder if she might be the woman they’ve been looking for.

Frank is deeply in love with Chai but knows she’ll never be complete without a woman to love as well. Can he match the passion of not one but two exquisite and complicated women at the same time? Will Luci even want him? And if Chai truly falls in love with Luci, will there be room for him?

All three characters in this intense erotic love story wrestle with the meaning of love, lust and commitment as they struggle to find themselves—and each other.

You Have Lots of Potential #MWTease #Menage #eXbdd

August 9, 2017 by Adriana Kraft

Welcome to MidWeek Tease, where authors share tempting snippets to tide you over till the weekend. A huge shout out to author Angelica Dawson for hosting our blog hop every week!

We’re thrilled Extasy Books is re-releasing our Meghan’s Playhouse series, which has been unavailable for over four years. When we started writing Book One, Seducing Cat, we simply planned an erotic romp and set about creating a scenario that would bring two women and one man together for some hot ménage scenes. But those three characters insisted on having more meaning, and it wasn’t long before we had a series outlined. Seducing Cat earned five stars at The TBR Pile, and Book Two, A Woman for Zachary, was just released last Friday.

It’s New York! Broadway beckons, but Meg has more fun keeping an erotic triangle going with her current flame, Zach Cullen, and her drama coach, Josie Patrice.

EXCERPT

“I’m leaving tomorrow for a couple weeks.” Zach eyed Josie as if she’d just agreed to watch out for his interests while he was gone. “I trust you, Josie. I know Meg is in good hands with you. If there’s anyone in the theater world who can develop raw talent into a star, it’s you.”

Josie flushed under his rare attempt at flattery. She knew he respected her work, but he seldom tried to voice it. At last she nodded. “I do my best. Meg has the innate talent, but she’ll have to want to work very hard to develop it. What I offer can do little if she doesn’t have the desire.”

“I know. I think she does.” His shoulders slumped a little. “But she can be flighty.” He gave her an awkward smile. “Guess that may be a factor of age—or maybe it’s simply part of being female.”

“You,” Josie said, rapping her fist against his firm chest.

He grabbed her wrist. “Sometimes I think you’re as much of a spitfire as she is. Anyhow, I have to go. I’ll leave Meg in your capable hands.” Zach narrowed his eyes. “Let me know if she strays. I’m not about to tolerate that. I’ll let her go when I’m ready.”

Yanking her hand out of his grasp, Josie retreated a step. “I will not be your spy. If she wants to fuck every man and woman in New York, that’s her business. And if she does, I’ll never tell.”

Laughter rumbled from Zach’s diaphragm. “It always amazes me how you women stick together. And I don’t believe even our Meg can do the entire population of New York City in two weeks. So long. Have fun.”

Josie fumed as Zach turned away and headed for the foyer. She let him go. She had nothing to gain by pursuing him.

She turned back toward the stage.

Damn, did he only see her as some sort of surrogate mother? And Zach’s ego aside, she highly doubted Meg had remained faithful during his many forays across the country. Most likely faithfulness had never even crossed the mind of the free-spirited Meg Keenan. Josie might not know her as well as Zach did, but in some ways, perhaps, she knew her better. After all, they were both women.

She let her gaze slide over the young woman, appraising her afresh. Even in jeans and a loose sweater, Meg exuded sex. Her ass curved so seductively. Her breasts bobbed ever so slightly as she moved across the stage. Her smile must light up lovers as well as audiences.

“Yes,” Josie murmured to herself. “You have lots of potential.” Josie’s hands warmed as she allowed herself to briefly imagine learning the curves of the young woman’s body.

Her breath caught in her windpipe. Zach was leaving Meg in her good hands. She shut her eyes and opened them slowly. Maybe she should show Zach just how faithful his young sprite could be—that knowledge might save him considerable pain down the road.

Zachary Cullen has ignored Josette Patrice’s overtures for years, but she agrees to take on his latest protégé-slash-arm-candy Meghan Keenan in her off-Broadway workshop theater.
