Stolen Painting Returned: Life Imitates Art #RomanticSuspense #ArtHeist #IARTG #MFRWauthor

September 17, 2022 by Adriana Kraft

Don’t you love when life imitates art? Today’s headline in Southern Arizona tells about the return – after significant restoration work at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles – of a de Kooning painting worth over $100 Million. The delivery was kept secret due to the value of the painting, and it was accompanied by uniformed police and Homeland Security officials.

Did we write this? Well, not quite. Our little heist from a fictional small town Nebraska museum was on a far smaller scale. We never created an actual value for the (again fictional) trio of “priceless” Impressionist paintings involved; we did, however, develop so much detail in describing them that they feel real to me. Unlike the de Kooning painting, ours were never defaced and needed no restoration. I suppose I’m giving away the happy ending of finding them, but it’s a romance, so you knew that anyway!

You can read more about how the De Kooning painting was stolen and recovered at this link: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/16/woman-ochre-de-koonings-painting-from-theft-to-its-return-home.html. I was fascinated to know how close we came in our story to creating the variables that make such a heist possible—but then Mr. Kraft is a criminologist, so we had a leg up. If you’d like to read more about how we stumbled onto our story, check out our release announcement from 2014: https://adrianakraft.com/?p=6076

A heist? A murder? It’s villain’s choice.

BLURB

A special-order art theft? Tedious, but seamless – until small town museum director Kara Daniels calls in the experts. Furious her favorite trio of priceless impressionist paintings has been stolen from its traveling exhibit on her watch, Kara is determined to save not only the paintings, but her future in the art world. She’ll stop at nothing to entrap the thief.

Ted Springs knows the underbelly of the criminal world a little closer than he might like—but he’s turned it to good advantage, first as a police officer, and now as detective for the Upper Midwest Arts Council. His job? To guarantee the security of the valuable paintings in the Council’s traveling exhibits.

Heat sizzles when Ted and Kara collide—can they work together, before it’s too late?

REVIEWS

Five stars at Goodreads: “The sex is hot and I loved the phone sex scenes. Never did I expect the ending. It was brilliant. The Heist is a winner!” Sheila G.

Five stars at Amazon: “From the start, the perspective of Kara, the museum’s director and the thieves are cleverly interwoven…  rich in detail…   held my interest and kept me reading forward.” Gaele  “Very hot…engaging, entertaining, funny and serious, well written and extremely enjoyable to read.” Donna H.

EXCERPT

“I and my staff have already done fairly thorough background checks on all the museum employees,” Ted said.

“Oh.” Kara scowled. “I’m not sure I like that.”

“But you expected it?”

“Of course. At some point.”

“I believe in being efficient. Even before certain added incentives.”

“I can always change my mind. I don’t know a thing about you.”

“You know enough. I have large hands.” Ted chuckled when she winced. “I’ve worked for the Upper Midwest Arts Council for five years.”

“And before that?”

“I was a Chicago cop.”

“Oh.”

“I went into the army right out of high school and completed my BA degree at U.I.C. while on the force. Funny, isn’t it? While you were working on your MA at the University of Chicago, I was patrolling the streets of Hyde Park and South Chicago.”

“Really?”

“That’s right.”

“Maybe we bumped into each other.”

“I highly doubt that. I wouldn’t forget bumping into you. Remember?”

“Oh, right.” Kara’s flush returned.

Stress – But not a complaint! #EroticRomance #RomanticSuspense #MFRWAuthor

January 5, 2022 by Adriana Kraft

Do you let stress derail you plans?

Um, yes. Today’s Wednesday. I always have a post ready ahead of time for the MFRW Book Hooks weekly blog hop – but not this morning. I wasn’t even aware I’d missed it until I started running into the BookHooks posts of other authors on social  media this morning.

Stressors? On top of political turmoil and Covid fears, we lost a very dear friend Christmas day, and as so often also happens when I’m under stress, I didn’t pay enough attention to self-care and have developed a minor infection (short lived and easily cured, I hasten to add).

Stress doesn’t necessarily always stem from negative events – we’re thrilled our granddaughter is getting married this weekend. We can’t be there, and I put pressure on myself to get our gift to her in a timely manner. Which went out FedEx this morning.

I’m not writing all this on our blog to complain, but to talk about the impact of stressors on the best laid plans. Sometimes we have to simply step aside, accept what life has handed us, and change direction.

This is what Merry Delaney faces with the intrusion of Detective Jim Barnes into her life. Widowed for over a year, Merry is happily exploring all the dimensions of her new sexual liberation and has no plans to stop or slow down for anyone. Jim is investigating a mob funds-laundering scheme related to drug trafficking, and one of Merry’s accounting clients is under suspicion. She’s just discovered that some of her files have mysteriously disappeared from her home office computer…

EXCERPT

Merry looked up from the computer screen to see the object of her concern stalk into her office. He didn’t look any more relaxed than earlier. He held out his hand to her. She saw three tiny objects.

She cringed away from his hard stare. “What are they? Where did you find them?”

“Each of your three phones was tapped.”

“Shit. You were right about the computer, too. I don’t know why the security programs didn’t block the hacker. Somebody knows what they’re doing. You didn’t find anything else?”

“I’m not an expert on that, so we’ll wait for the people I called.”

“So we don’t know if anyone is listening as we speak.”

“Probably not.”

Merry slammed a fist on her desk. “This is too much. Having you spy on me from bushes is one thing, but this guy or woman is lurking in my space.”

“As I said, Merry, I doubt they have the house bugged. We’ll know for sure in a couple hours.”

“Good. I don’t like this, Jim. Not one bit.” She chewed on her lower lip. “It’s scary.”

“I know it is. Come on,” he said, offering her a hand. “Let’s go outside. Just in case.”

She grabbed his hand and led the way out onto the patio. “Would you hold me, please?” She directed him to the chaise lounge and sat on his lap. “Put your arms around me, please. I’m chilled. I’ve never been this scared. I was just trying to help—to help those young girls stay off drugs.”

The Merry Widow is the steamy story of a mid-life widow’s sexual awakening. Following a prologue to set the stage, it opens with an erotic scene between two women – the first ever in our heroine’s life. If this isn’t your cup of tea, no problem – you might prefer our Romantic Suspense books, all of which deliver one man, one woman, hot sex, and perilous danger.

But if this appeals to you – hang on for the ride! Recently widowed and in her early forties, Merry Delany is about to plunge into a self-discovery journey that takes her places she’s never imagined, much less hoped for. Once passion is unleashed, can it be stopped?

In today’s scene, Jim and Merry have just completed a thorough search of her house to make sure it isn’t bugged. They’re on her patio, where she now knows he’s previously spied on her…

EXCERPT

“And what about last night? You seemed to have been in your perch—or whatever—again.”

“Oh, yeah. I’d just learned about the computer hacking and I was suspicious of your phones. So I’d raced over here to protect you—only you weren’t here, so I waited.”

“I see.” Merry bit into an orange, which squirted in Jim’s direction. He reached for a napkin and wiped the table. “So from where you sat”—she motioned toward the numerous bushes ringing her yard—“did it look like I needed protecting last night?”

“Not really. You’re damn good at asking questions, Merry. Now I have a few for you. Did you think I was out there last night? That I was watching?”

Merry tapped her lips with a napkin. “It did occur to me to wonder.”

“And did that turn you on—wondering if I was watching?”

“Maybe. Did watching me turn you on?”

BLURB

The millennium arrived with such promise—will it deliver for recently widowed Merry Delaney?

So much for all the anticipation about the new millennium. Merry Delaney’s life is still in a rut and shows no signs of changing. Sex? A fading memory, gone long before her husband actually died. Excitement? Hardly the hallmark of an accountant’s life. At forty-two, what can she look forward to?

Until her best friend takes Merry’s predicament into her practiced hands. One passionate kiss unleashes possibilities Merry never dreamed of—and she wants to sample them all. Men? Women? Young? Old? Ménage? Toys? Yes, to all, to pleasure, to making up for lost time.

Enter Chicago Detective Jim Barnes, who solicits Merry’s help with a mob funds-skimming case. Can the scorching passion that soon smolders between Merry and Jim survive the escalating mob threats of exposure? Having discovered a zest for sex, will Merry ever again be satisfied with one man?

Five Stars for The Merry Widow #NewReview #MFRWAuthor #RomanticSuspense

April 7, 2020 by Adriana Kraft

I hope you are safe and well in this perilous time. If you or your loved ones have been directly affected by the Covid 19 virus, our hearts go out to you. Our son has lost a friend who lived in New York City, and a former co-worker with whom I was very close has just been diagnosed positive. We are hoping for the best.

I’m sure many of you, like us, are staying at home, except for essentials like obtaining groceries. We take long walks, take turns doing our core workouts on our living room floor, and of course continue writing.

Whatever you’re doing – home schooling children, working on the front lines as a healthcare provider, delivering groceries and supplies for those who cannot shop for themselves, working from home in a job you can do from your computer – I hope you’re also caring for yourself, following safe practices, and of course finding time for reading.

We love this fun graphic, created by N. N. Light. To us, it looks like Merry herself, opening the French doors that lead from her bedroom to her back patio and her beloved gardens. I suspect in our current crisis, living as she does in a north Chicago suburb, she would be able to spend time outside in those gardens, though it might be a tad chilly or even snowy. But our artist caught her in a moment where she’s going back to bed to read, and we hope you do, too!

REVIEW

Wow, what an incredible book! Not only is this a gripping romantic suspense, but the heat level is hotter than Death Valley. Merry exploration adds a scorching depth to the story but it’s very well done. Merry’s pleasure journey is more about her rediscovering herself after years in solitude than having all kinds of sex. The emotions are firmly entrenched and that is what makes The Merry Widow such a wonderful romance. The characters leap off the page with their own set of insecurities and hang-ups. The plot moves at a quick pace with a balance between the erotic romance and the suspense. The ending took me by surprise and I was a little sad to see it end. I grew attached to the characters and wanted to stay in their world a little bit longer. The Merry Widow will be on my keeper shelf and one I will be re-reading again and again. Highly recommend! N. N. Light
