BLURB

How can a couple of former spies enjoy life in their personal corner of paradise, when things from the past keep coming back to haunt them?

What does a former spy have to do to get some peace and quiet in his personal corner of paradise? In the laidback ease of the Florida Keys, Nick Seven has carved out a life far removed from the intrigue that once defined his life in the CIA. He runs his trendy club on the Gulf, keeps a low profile, and enjoys the tropical setting with Felicia, his Barbadian lover and former co-worker. After he sees a woman being killed at a resort, Nick finds himself thrust into an investigation where there is no corpse and no evidence of a crime. The police are busy with a string of high-profile home burglaries and don’t have time to look for his imaginary victim, so it’s up to Nick to investigate. Then French con artist Marco St. Julian unexpectedly surfaces from Nick’s past. Are the incidents related? And what part does the wealthy young trophy wife of a convicted financial scammer play in all of this? Throw in a career-hungry FBI agent, a mysterious Cuban crook and an ex-patriate Irish gunrunner, and it’s more than just another day at the beach.

EXCERPT

The intruder stood in the shadows at the rear of a spacious oceanfront home on Duck Key, waiting for the right moment to go to work. The nighttime Florida sky was punctuated by a bright slice of quarter-moon and a handful of stars. The only light in the old-moneyed neighborhood was provided by ornate street lamps and security lights. Just the way the intruder liked it: enough light to see by, not enough to be seen. The background noise was a combination of waves lapping ashore and distant trawlers scooping up fresh catch. Occasionally a car would cruise by.

The home was one of many in the rich Florida Keys oceanfront enclave known as Hawk’s Cay, just south of Conch Key on the Overseas Highway. It was the kind of place that catered to a certain brand of people, like rich retirees, trust fund babies and savvy bankers who got out while the market was still good. Thousands of people cruised past it every day on their way to and from Key West without giving it more than a passing glance.

The intruder wore a black nylon catsuit that covered every inch of flesh from head to toe, as though they had been sprayed with onyx lacquer. They saw their shadow flash briefly in the glass of the French doors, tall and slender with narrow hips, an elfin-like creature gliding through the night. Their gloved fingers ran along the frame of the door that led to the interior of the home, but stopped when they located the security system sensor near the top. It was a cheap hardware-store variety contact alarm, not appropriate for such an expensive house. The person carefully slid a thin piece of magnetized metal between the two contact points, then crouched to work on the lock. Two metal picks in the keyhole were expertly moved against the tumblers until the intruder heard the telltale click of the lock giving way.

They opened the door and stepped inside, finding themselves in a small dining area off of the kitchen. The interior of the house was illuminated by one lamp from the living room. They stood still for a few moments, not detecting any sounds, then walked to the bedrooms at the rear of the home. They used a small flashlight to illuminate the way, then stopped when they reached the largest bedroom at the end of the hallway. According to the floor plan, this was the master suite.

They approached a dresser and found a small wooden jewelry chest in plain view. Their gloved hands opened it and the flashlight’s beam reflected off the gold and diamond baubles the chest contained. The intruder took a black vinyl drawstring bag from a pocket and transferred the contents to the bag.

They switched off the flashlight, then retraced their steps to the French doors leading to the deck. They momentarily froze when a car passed on the street nearby. After waiting a few moments, the person left the way they had come in and moved to the street, taking advantage of the natural cover provided by shrubs and hibiscus bushes. They made their way to a black Toyota coupe parked down the block and got in.

The driver pulled off the black hood of the catsuit, then fluffed her long dark brown hair, letting it cascade to her shoulders. She pulled down the visor and looked into the lighted vanity mirror, arranging her hair with her fingers. She checked her tanned face for a moment and satisfied herself that she looked natural, not like someone who had just committed a home invasion.

She drove slowly along the narrow street, then crossed a wooden bridge that traversed the channel that ran through the subdivision. When she reached the Overseas Highway she merged with the northbound traffic and maintained the speed limit to avoid any attention from the police routinely patrolling the highway. She glanced at the small bag of gems on the passenger seat and smiled, feeling a little giddy. She gazed forward and saw the marker sign on the right berm, the one reminding her that she was 15 miles from Key Largo.

She continued her northern trek while doing mental calculations. Tonight marked the sixth successful break-in over the past two weeks at various locations along The Keys. All were of fancy homes owned by well-to-do people with more money than they knew what to do with–wealthy industrialists and financiers who had made their riches off the sweat of blue-collar types, and the investors who fell for their scams. People who were smart enough to fleece the flock and dodge the subpoenas when the lawsuits began flying.

The woman slowed as she reached the entrance to the Sunset Resort on the Gulf side of Key Largo. She signaled her turn, then crossed the median into the parking lot, nosing the coupe into a spot at the end of the building, where there was no security camera. She got out, used a key card to enter the hotel, and took the elevator to the third floor. She hesitated before walking to her room, checking that there were no guests in the hallway.

Once inside the suite, the woman transferred tonight’s haul into a gallon-size freezer bag. She took a moment to give a closer look at something that had caught her eye. It was a gold pendant in the shape of a unicorn, about two inches long, with emeralds making up the horn and eyes, on a heavy rope chain. She pocketed the necklace, then secured the bag alongside three others in the designated hiding place.

WHO IS GILLIAN SMITH?

Gillian Smith, the heroine of my Toymakers Guild series, is a scientific genius and a sexual adventurer. She’s only nineteen when she shows up at the door of Randerley Hall, successfully figures out the access code, and demonstrates sufficient talent in both the technical and carnal realms to win a place for herself among the secretive and selective band of erotic artificers.

As the series continues, she becomes more mature, taming some of her impulsiveness and learning to understand the nuances of desire. She assumes increasing responsibility for the work of the Guild, providing design guidance and supervising the other engineers. Meanwhile, she remains open to the varied opportunities for sensual pleasure offered by Guild membership. She understands that lust is the lubricant for the Guild’s creativity and that despite the outrageous ways that it is sometimes expressed, the bonds among the Toymakers go far beyond the physical.

Authors often – perhaps even always – use aspects of themselves when creating their characters. Nevertheless, Gillian is not me. When I was nineteen, I was a dreamy bookworm, not an engineer. While she is bold and self-confident, I was painfully shy. Her appearance – tall, slender, with curly reddish hair – has little in common with my short, curvy build and mousy brown locks.

Still, at her age I was as fascinated by sex as she is, if nowhere near as active. As I grew older, that fascination deepened. I began to explore my kinks and cravings and live out my fantasies in a manner that she’d understand. I’ve had sexual adventures she’d find quite familiar. In the meantime, my view of sexuality ended up having quite a lot in common with hers – that even what seems like casual lust has emotional and spiritual dimensions.

I also must admit to basing some of Gillian’s emotions and behavior as a technical project leader on my own experience. I did end up as an engineer of sorts: a software engineer. Most of the technology in the Toymakers Guild series comes straight out of my imagination. I couldn’t wire a motor or machine a set of gears to save my life. But I do know what it’s like trying to deal with bugs in your programs when you’re facing a critical deadline. I understand the heavy burden of responsibility that comes with commitments that seem impossible to fulfill.

So, yes, Jill and I do share some traits and beliefs, though there’s more than a century between our worlds and half a century between our ages.  To me, though, she’s an independent individual – and after three novels, remarkably real. As an author, I’m amazed by the way characters develop over the course of writing a book. They begin as a sketch, perhaps borrowing from people we know (including ourselves), but before long they have lives of their own. Having followed her for more than three years and two hundred fifty thousand words, I know who Gillian Smith is. Honestly, though, I don’t know where she came from.

BLURB

How do you train a steampunk sexbot?

Gillian Smith’s promotion to journeyman proves she’s ready to lead the Toymakers in producing astonishing new erotic artifacts. Creative, brilliant, and debauched, she’ll stretch her capabilities to the limit as she juggles a talent shortage and a pair of jealous rivals. Then there’s the challenge of their latest commission—a life-sized programmable sex doll intended to replace a client’s deceased paramour.

Normally she would consult the enigmatic Master Toymaker, but he seems preoccupied with his own concerns. Though her lusty crew of sexual renegades can offer technical and carnal assistance, Gillian is ultimately responsible for delivering the promised, near-impossible technology.

It’s fortunate she’s not one to give up—not even when events threaten the Guild’s very survival.

 SERIES BLURB

Defying the repressive morality of the Victorian era, the Toymakers Guild uses advanced technology to fabricate bespoke sexual artifacts for the discrete pleasure of select clients. Its members are not only brilliant engineers but also sexual renegades seeking freedom from the prudish society that surrounds them. These are their stories.

X-Rated F/F Excerpt

When several knocks went unanswered, Gillian tried the knob. The door was unlocked. It opened upon a scene that set her pulse racing.

Spring sunshine poured in through the tall window, filling the room with a luminous glow. It shone like a spotlight upon the bed, where two female figures lay entwined. Lucy lay on top, stark naked. Sunbeams glinted off the golden locks that tumbled down her back. The graceful curve of her spine flowed down to her pert, round buttocks. Those luscious, peach-toned globes tensed and relaxed in a steady rhythm as she rubbed her cunny against the body beneath her.

Under Lucy’s writhing form, with her arms stretched out on both sides and her thighs spread wide, lay Emily. The former maid wore nothing but a shift. As Gillian watched, entranced, Lucy rose to her knees and pushed the thin linen garment up to bare Emily’s breasts. The sight of those perfect hemispheres made Gillian’s mouth water. Apparently they had a similar effect on Lucy, who leaned over to suckle on one dark, pouting nipple.

“Oh! Unh…” Emily sighed in inarticulate delight as Lucy feasted upon her flesh. “Oh, Loo-see…”

The flaxen-haired seductress licked slow circles around each taut nub, then slid down toward Emily’s little belly, leaving a trail of wet kisses. When she reached Emily’s cunny, she used her thumbs to open the sweet cleft and swept her tongue from back to front.

Emily yelped and arched up to maintain contact with Lucy’s agile tongue. Gillian shuddered in vicarious pleasure. Lucy squirmed backward to improve her angle of attack, then dove into her partner’s pussy, licking and sucking with a gusto that soon had Emily thrashing and moaning anew.

The girl twisted and tugged at her nipples as she humped Lucy’s face. Her braids came undone, the fine, ash-blond hair tangling on the pillow. Her inner thighs gleamed in the slanting afternoon sun, wet with Lucy’s saliva and her own copious juices.

Gillian’s breasts were swollen and tender. Her drawers were soaked, her clit a bright, burning coal. She couldn’t bear another instant of this detached surveillance.

After closing the door behind her, she placed the velvet bag on the dressing table and quickly stripped off her clothing. At first she thought the women were too involved with one another to notice her presence. Then Lucy raised her head from between Emily’s legs and flashed her a sticky-cheeked grin.

“Jill! Do you fancy a taste? Our Emily’s sweeter than Turkish delight.”

“You don’t mind?”

“Of course not. And I doubt Emily has any objections – do you, pumpkin?”

The ex-maid, who lay gasping upon the pillow, made no response, probably because she could not see Lucy’s face. Gillian stepped nearer to the head of the bed and leaned over to give the girl a quick kiss. Emily responded with enthusiasm, wrapping her arms around Gillian’s neck to pull her close and sliding an exploratory tongue between her lips.

Who taught her that? What had the girl been up to, while Gillian had been preoccupied with work and her feuding lovers?

Always Cambridge by @AuthorHKCarlton #Sale #MafiaRomance #Suspense

December 27, 2022 by Adriana Kraft

Today I’m thrilled to welcome Kymmie Carlton back to our pages. I fell in love with the Always Cambridge series and its kick-ass heroine immediately, and I highly recommend the entire series, not just for all the characters you’ll root for, but also for all the unpredictable twists and turns in the story. You’ll never get bored!
Take it away, Kymmie!
~ o ~
Hello Everyone! Hope you had a Happy Christmas. Can you believe we are heading into a New Year? Wow! And what can you say about the last few years we’ve had? Here’s to a better 2023.

As we look forward though, it’s also a time for reflection and looking back. I’ve been thinking a lot lately of my first series, The Always Cambridge Saga. This story and characters have been with me a very long time. The series was published back in 2014, with a six month marathon of rapid release dates. A book a month, from April to September. Phew! It was a hectic time, for a fairly new author, but to finally share the story with readers was a dream come true.

Romantic Suspense, Mafia Romance, Family Saga, Organized Crime

The Always Cambridge Series chronicles the life of Holly Cambridge through her tumultuous childhood and violent teen years and the consequences that stem from being the daughter of mob boss, Bill Cambridge.

This story is a true saga and coming of age story, following Holly from the age of nine, through her violent teen years, and eventually into her forties. Each book starts where the last leaves off. The violence and sexual content amps up in later installments, reflecting Holly’s age as she matures and circumstances change. Holly evolves from a shy, young girl who only wishes to make the world a better place and perhaps atone for her father’s evil deeds, into a courageous warrior who will sacrifice her own life to protect the people she loves.

Our lucky heroine also has a trio of formidable men who weave their way in and out of her tumultuous life. Randy Phillips, her beloved body guard, Special Agent Alex Orton, from the FBI, and most surprisingly of all, Victor Mayhue, the son from a rival crime family. But Holly is no damsel in distress, she doesn’t need a man to swoop in and save her, no, she’s quite capable of taking care of herself. In fact, often she rescues them.

Always Cambridge : Book One

His only duty is to keep her safe, but he can’t save her…

Holly Cambridge is just a typical kid, or so she thinks, until one day, she takes a good look around and realizes her friends don’t have bodyguards dogging their every step.

At the age of sixteen, Holly is assigned a new bodyguard, Randy Phillips. He is a tall, muscular, God-like force in the young, impressionable and lonely girl’s life. He is her friend, her confident, her conscience, and the older man she adores beyond reason.

Randy Phillips is fully aware of his young charge’s adolescent crush on him. Although he is flattered by the adulation, he maintains a safe distance and professional demeanor until Holly is wounded in a rival family blood feud, and the course of both their lives is changed forever.

Warning for Language and Violence

***This is the pivotal scene that changes everything for Holly and Randy

“Randy!”

Patrick appeared in the doorway of Cambridge’s office. I’d been sitting here all goddamn afternoon trying to figure out what was up with the computer system when all I wanted to do was get back to Holly. It was times like these that I realized I still had a lot to learn. Maybe I should have let her come with me. She would have diagnosed the problem and had it fixed by now. And she’d be with me and I wouldn’t be worried about her and my stomach wouldn’t hurt. I rubbed the back of my neck again trying to brush away the cold feeling.

“Randy! They’ve been hit.”

“Shit! Which patrol?” I asked still distracted. When Paddy didn’t answer right away I looked to where he stood in the door. He was pale and I could see him trembling from where I sat.

“Jeffy and Dale,” he answered gravely.

A cold hole punched into my chest. “Holly?”

He nodded once. “They’re all down.”

I raced past him, pulling on my coat as I ran. I jammed into the nearest car in the courtyard—a whole procession of them were ready to leave. “Hurry the f*ck up!” I yelled.

Everyone in the car was talking as we pulled away. I didn’t listen. I couldn’t. My head was buzzing. It was full of noise. My chest hurt. I felt cold but I could feel sweat beading on my forehead and running down my back.

Could we not go any f*ckin’ faster?

“Are the cops there?” someone asked.

“Yeah, cops are everywhere. EMTs are there too.”

I felt like I was going to jump out of my own skin. “Hurry the f*ck up,” I cursed at them as we came to a stop.

“F*ck off, Phillips. I’m goin’ as fast as I can. Traffics backed up because of the…”

I didn’t hear the rest. I couldn’t take it anymore. I bolted from the car and ran towards the food bank. About a block away, I was stopped by cops barring anyone entrance. They had barricades up and yellow tape to keep people out.

F*ck! I had to get to her. I should have been there!

I looked around. Down the alley. Up to the rooftops.

I pushed the guy in front of me hard, so he’d collide with the cop who wouldn’t let me through. While they wrestled, I sprinted down the alleyway, through the back door of the bakery, ran through the store and out the front door. Now I was on the inside of the barricades. There were people everywhere. I kept my head down, moving without being noticed.

The rest of the guys arrived at the cordoned off area. I heard the Cambridge name and the cops went into a f*ckin’ frenzy. I took off, using them as a distraction. There would be some arrests, I knew. We were armed for this war.

As I approached the food bank I saw broken glass everywhere. The plate glass windows were gone from every store in the vicinity, shattered. As I moved closer to the black Cambridge car I could see that it was riddled with bullet holes.

I saw Dale first. He was face down, his body half on the sidewalk, half on the road. Behind the car, a pool of blood ran like a rivulet down the crease between the curb and the road.

Holly! Her name resonated in my head.

Everything around me seemed to be moving in slow motion. Even me. I wanted to go faster but I couldn’t seem to get my body to catch up with my racing mind. The only thing I could hear was my own ragged breathing and my heartbeat drumming in my ears, and the blaring sirens off in the distance.

Holly!

Jeffy was on his back, closer to the building. The back of his head was gone.

Holly!

Trent lay face down on the sidewalk, his big body blocking the door of the food bank, as if he’d tried to put himself between the bullets and…Holly!

An ambulance was backed up against the curb, back doors wide open. Cops stood in front of the store entrance, taking pictures and numbering spent casings.

F*ck! They were all dead!

Holly!

I moved towards the door. I saw EMTs and a stretcher inside the building. One of the paramedics came to the door and said to a uniform, “We’re ready to transport. Can you move this guy so we can get out?”

“Yeah. I think we’ve got all the pictures we need. Just need a chalk line.”

“Hurry up, this one’s getting shocky,” came another voice from inside.

“Holly?” Was that my voice?

“You can’t go in there?” said one cop.

“How’d you get here?” asked the other.

Mrs. Small was just inside the door holding a bandage to her head. Her shirt and face were covered in blood. I pushed at the cop, suddenly more frantic than ever to get in there. The clawing inside my chest was gonna blow. The cop held me back.

“Holly!” I roared.

“Please let him through,” Mrs. Small cried. “He’s the young lady’s young man. She needs him. Please.”

“We can’t let you in there. You’ll contaminate our crime scene.”

“Oh, God!” My head swam. My vision tunneled. Crime scene. “Please!” My own voice echoed in my head. “Please. Just tell me. Tell me she’s not dead!”

If you love erotic romance suspense thrillers, do check out her Cambridge series, which features one of the best kick-ass heroines I’ve known. But that’s nothing to do with Christmas and why she’s here today – a holiday celebration of a somewhat different nature…

Are there any December babies in the house today? Make sure to leave us a comment below if you are. I’m one of those kids born in the month of December. 🎈 The Kymmie me, that is. (Though if you read my author bio on certain sites my birthday might be listed as August. That’s because the author me, H K Carlton, wasn’t born until my first book was published, August 27, 2012). 😉

I know some of the Sagittarius/Capricorn crowd have issues with their birthday falling in December, feeling perhaps a bit cheated, especially when that date falls on or about the 25th. I’m not one of those people. My lovely mama always made me feel special. 🎂

When I was really young, I had pizza parties with my schoolmates. We had cake and presents, none of which were Christmas-themed or wrapped in festive paper. The one holiday tradition my parents did adhere to every year though was that the Christmas tree didn’t go up until my b’day, even when my siblings begged them to put it up early. It wasn’t lost on me, that my brother and sisters didn’t get a bedazzled evergreen raised on their birthdays. And though I did recognize and respect the symbolism and true significance of the Christmas tree, the fact that my mum and dad waited to put it up, made me feel extra special. And I still adhere to that tradition with my own family. 🎄

Our heroines from Xmas Spouse Swap, Iris and Siri, are also December babies.

Meet the twins who take share and share alike to a whole new level…

Separated at the age of sixteen by selfish battling parents going through a bitter divorce, twin sisters Iris and Siri Beaulieu vow to never be apart on Christmas Eve, which is also their birthday.

Now grown and married and perhaps a bit bored with their husbands, the twins decide to give each other the ultimate birthday present, by switching identities.

One tipsy Christmas Eve leads to a twin swap the husbands will never forget.

How’s that for a Merry Christmas to all?

Excerpt:

Iris downed what was left in her wine glass before topping up all four goblets.

Brett and Kyle continued to toss ornaments on the tree as Siri joined her by the counter. Siri snagged her glass and took a long swallow.

“You okay?” Siri asked.

“Mmm hmm,” Iris answered.

“You still wanna do what we talked about?”

“Mmm hmm.”

“Tonight’s the night? All or bust?” Siri crooked her pinkie finger.

Without hesitation, Iris curled her baby digit around her sister’s. “Pinkie swear,” she whispered.

“Happy birthday, sista-mine.” Siri winked conspiratorially.

“What’s up, ladies?” Brett asked, suddenly towering over them.

“Nothing,” Siri shrugged and guzzled her drink.

“Doesn’t look like nothing to me,” Kyle interjected, joining them. “Do you think they’re up to something, Brett?”

“Guaranteed. Especially when they’ve resorted to the old pinkie swear. That means it’s serious business.”

“We merely wished each other a happy birthday,” Siri said.

It wasn’t a lie. If things worked out, they were giving each other the ultimate gift.
