Set Up: Today’s snippet immediately follows last week’s, in Meg’s thoughts. Um, I might have forgotten to mention where she is, but you’ll figure it out…

Drifting, Meg wondered how many other women Zach had brought to Josie. Had she been able to work miracles for them, too?

Don’t be a little girl. If there was to be a miracle in her career, it would happen because of hard work and dedication. Even then, there were no guarantees.

But she had her chance now, and she’d always be grateful to Zach for helping her snag that opportunity. He groaned beneath her, and his large hands cradled her rear, keeping them joined.

This was good, for the moment. She rubbed her nose across his chest hair, then settled her cheek against him and let sleep have its way.

Set up: They might have been talking about her, but now Meg’s curious about Zach and Josie…

While the acting classes were taxing, Meg thrived on working with Josette Patrice in the theater workshop. Josie had so much to offer. She’d been active onstage before turning to directing, and Meg knew enough to realize she was in the hands of an excellent teacher. Zach had reiterated that fact over and over, but in her gut, she knew it to be true. The woman’s sophistication nearly took her breath away. She carried herself with the kind of aloofness and pride that Meg hoped someday to emulate.

Meg had spied the animated conversation Josette and Zach were having that afternoon in the rear of the theater and wondered, not for the first time, about the odd relationship between the two. On the surface, they seemed much more suited together than herself and Zach. They had to be closer in age, and they must also share some sort of interest in the theater world. After all, Zach had brought her to Josette for the express purpose of helping her with her career.

This week’s snippet picks up where last week’s left off. We’re still with Josie and Zach at the back of the darkened theater, watching Meg rehearse. Zach has made a comment about Meg, but Josie’s still struggling with her reactions to him…

EXCERPT

Josie squared her shoulders. At forty-three, she was hardly over the hill. She’d had her share of lovers. Given Zach’s lack of interest, she’d flaunted her female lovers before him. She felt her nipples pebble—maybe that had been a mistake. Zachary Cullen was not a man to be toyed with. Certainly he must know by now that she wasn’t simply into women. Evidently he didn’t give a whit about her sexual appetites.

“Well? Is she regressing?” Zach made no effort to conceal his annoyance at Josie’s lack of response.

This week’s snippet picks up where last week’s left off. We’re still with Josie and Zach at the back of the darkened theater, watching Meg rehearse.

EXCERPT

Set Up: here is the last sentence from last week: Meghan was the third young woman he’d brought her over the past ten years.

“She seems more wooden, less natural than when I first saw her in that little community playhouse back in Wisconsin,” Zach said, breaking the silence.

Lost in her own thoughts, Josie startled at the gravelly sound of Zach’s deep voice. It was that slow, strong drawl that had appealed to her since the first time they’d met. That, and his burning eyes that seemed capable of peering into her soul.

Josie wet her lips watching the stage lights bounce off the girl’s auburn hair, as if setting her afire. Had Meg been caught up in Zach’s vision for her, or in his nearly overwhelming air of masculinity? She had to admit his broad shoulders and tapered hips triggered her own lusty imagination. Damn. She hated the fact that she had difficulty ignoring his manliness, and he never even looked at her as a woman. Apparently, he only saw her as a conduit for helping his protégés advance their careers.
