Too much pain…#Sunday8 #wewriwa #SundaySnippet #MFRWAuthor #Contest

December 8, 2019 by Adriana Kraft

Our giveaway of an autographed print copy of Heat Wave lasts all month – of course, you can always read it free at Kindle Unlimited!

Be sure to visit Weekend Writing Warriors to check out the rest of today’s exciting excerpts!

Contest details after our Sunday Snippet:

Last week we watched as Ed Harrington arrived on Maggie’s front porch. That wasn’t the first time they’d met – as the book opens, she’s chased him down in Des Moines on a trusted friend’s recommendation and offered him a job. Here’s the reader’s first glance at his reaction:

EXCERPT

Harrington glanced away from Maggie Anderson’s penetrating blue eyes. They reminded him of robin’s eggs. He grimaced. He hadn’t seen a robin’s egg since he was a kid. But that wasn’t the reason he’d looked away. The woman was carrying too much pain; he already had more than enough pain for any one human being. He sure didn’t need to borrow any of hers.

Hang onto the land – but at what cost? Feisty widow hires ace racehorse trainer to salvage her family’s heritage. Can they survive escalating threats to life and limb?

Win an autographed copy of Cassie’s Hope #SnippetSunday #MFRWAuthor #8Sunday #SundayBlog

November 24, 2019 by Adriana Kraft

After taking a break, we have a new release scheduled from Extasy Books early next year, so to celebrate we’re giving away autographed print books, one every month. This month it’s Cassie’s Hope, Book One in our horse racing series, Riders Up. Contest link after the excerpt:

Here’s a Sunday morsel for you:

EXCERPT

“You’ll do it then?” Her dad’s voice squeaked.

Guilt, excitement and fear washed over Cassie in such quick succession that she couldn’t sort them out. Was she yielding? Hell, it’d been a done deal before she’d left Hope in her paddock. “Yes, I’ll try. Six months. No more. She is a very promising filly. I still don’t know how we can afford to do this.”

“We can afford it.” Tug’s eyes twinkled. “I got somethin’ else to tell you. Didn’t wanna till after you made up your mind. Didn’t wanna influence you too much…I’ve agreed to sell eighty acres to Mr. Dillingham, who’s been after that land for the last five years. After taxes and everybody’s fees, we should net a little over a million dollars.” Nodding softly, he said, “For once, I think we can afford to chase this dream.”

“Holy shit!” Cassie shrieked. “You did what? Why now?”

“There’s plenty of farm left for horses. Thought maybe I’ve been too stubborn for my own good. This may be my last chance, Cass. Holdin’ on to land is an important principle. But bein’ land poor probably don’t make much sense either. It’s yours, you know. I’m just gonna share some of it with you for awhile.”

“Oh, Daddy.” She bent down and kissed him on the cheek. “I don’t know what to say! We could go out and buy contenders. Horses that could be competitive stakes runners right away.”

“I know that.”

She saw a quick flash of that familiar stubborn streak set deep in his cat-gray eyes.

“Nope. The key is to raise a big horse—not just buy it. Any rich fool can buy into a good racehorse. That’s what baseball owners do when they ignore their farm teams. It takes skill to raise a contender.”

BLURB

High stakes, a fiery Irish redhead, her stunning racehorse, and a fiercely loyal rancher

What happens when a fiercely loyal widowed half-Ute cowboy meets a fiery redhead with an Irish temper to match? Cassidy O’Hanlon – Cassie, to her friends – has set aside her Chicago career for six months to train racehorses for her dad after his stroke.

Furious the interloper has shipped in a ringer from the Chicago circuit to his Wyoming turf, Rancher/trainer Clint Travers sets out to put her in her place. Sparks fly immediately, but after their rocky start, the two quickly forge a passionate relationship, and he follows her to Chicago.

When it becomes clear someone is drugging Cassie’s horse, Clint sets out to solve the mystery, but storms off in a cloud of wounded pride when suspicions turn to him.

Can love trump pride?

Five Stars at Goodreads: “…I took their journey with them. I felt their pain, their sadness, their struggles, and most of all their love. And that is the mark of a truly good book.”  Faith, Goodreads

“Oh. It’s you,” Brenda said, looking more than a little deflated.

“Thought you might be expecting me.” Michael pushed away from the door frame and entered the room. “Forgot how stinging fresh paint can be to the eyes and lungs.”

She shrugged, placed the sprayer on a work bench, and crossed her arms over her midsection. “Welcome back,” she grunted, regaining her cool. “Ted told me you wanted to buy into the business.” She frowned. “Are you really going to stay in Ashland?”

“Thought I might.”

He Waited… #wewriwa #8Sunday #MFRWAuthor

EXCERPT

Set-Up: Michael has just returned home to Ashland and started working for his father.

Michael Jarvis leaned against the doorjamb of the vaulted-ceiling living room, admiring the sway of Brenda Tower’s rear end as she sprayed primer over its ten-foot walls. Once she was done painting, he’d turn to some of the final sanding of the spiral staircase. His dad had sent him over to the new house on the pretense that he was too busy elsewhere to finish it.

Grimacing at the tall, lithe woman dressed in white paint-spattered coveralls, Michael knew his father wanted him to connect as quickly as possible with the painter he’d often described as quite the lady. His dad had always been a romantic when it came to him and Brenda. Michael sighed heavily. It had taken a near-death experience for him to recognize his feelings—but he had no clue if she’d welcome his interest after he’d rebuffed her years earlier.

Brenda hadn’t noticed him standing in the doorway, but he was pretty sure she couldn’t hear him above the sound of the sprayer. He waited.

A fragment of her dream… #8Sunday #WeWriWa #MFRWAuthor

Here are the opening lines of our romantic suspense The Painter is a Lady:

EXCERPT

Prologue

Pulling her flannel nightgown tighter around her frame, Brenda Tower stared out her bedroom window at Lake Superior in the gray distance. The waves must be twenty or thirty feet high for her to see them through the dawn haze. Had the late November storm awakened her? And why did she have such a feeling of dread? She’d always loved the lake – swimming, fishing, picnicking and playing on calm sunny days, and thrilling to its power when she watched it storm.

A fragment of her dream flashed before her eyes, sending a chill down her spine. Startled, she grasped for more detail, but it remained just out of reach, though filled with foreboding.

Lake, fishing boat, too many people, shouting, gunshots.

Must have been reading too many thrillers.

I came here to win a horse race #8Sunday #MFRWAuthor #RomanticSuspense

We’ve sat in the stands at Wyoming Downs and watched a California shipper breeze past the local Wyoming and Utah horses for an easy win, so we know something about why Clint Travers has a negative reaction to Cassie before they’ve even met. It’s a bit of a stretch to think a Chicago trainer would go to the expense and effort to ship a horse in just to get a win – the small purse will hardly cover expenses. But Cassie’s dad is a savvy trainer. He knows two things – the horse needs a win to build her confidence, and she’ll come back to Chicago with an altitude advantage. If all goes well, her next purse – in Chicago – will more than make up the difference.

EXCERPT

The cowboy glared at Cassie and anger crept into his voice. “You’re just trying to get a cheap win for your horse.”

“That’s horse racing, isn’t it?” Cassie’s voice rose, and she boldly returned his hard stare. “And the favorites win only a third of the time. So?”

“Uh huh—unless someone ships in a ringer. This filly will go off three to five. The bettors aren’t gonna be very happy with you, either.”

“Well, hot damn. I didn’t come here to win a popularity contest. I came here to win a horse race. And that’s what we’re going to try to do.”

High stakes, a fiery Irish redhead, her stunning racehorse, and a fiercely loyal rancher.
