EXCERPT

New York, New York 2014

Chapter One

“You’re telling me she’s doing nothing illegal?” Detective Thomas Walker remained stoic, assessing the graying man and woman he’d known for years. He’d stopped by the rest area kiosk to determine whether the couple managing the place was aware of the young redhead operating out of their parking area.

Raymond Stevens shrugged, and his wife, Nora, shook her head. “Dee’s a sweet girl,” Nora said. “She’s stopped by a few times with fresh coffee and doughnuts. She has a delightful smile and a big heart.”

“Coffee and doughnuts?” The damn woman was brazen, if not smart. These two wouldn’t likely testify against her. “What about you, Ray?”

The older man shrugged again and glanced at his wife. “She’s a nice girl. Not breaking any laws that I know of. She doesn’t camp overnight. I’ve been here at midnight, and the parking lot is empty. Sometimes her car is here before seven when we open. Of course, it’s not like she’s around on a daily basis.”

Tom shook his head and glanced at his watch. If she was on schedule, she was due back in about twenty minutes. He’d watched this drama unfold several times now. She’d have a car—an empty rental car—parked at the south end of the parking area. A trucker would pull through the parking area designated for trucks no later than mid-morning and stop across from her vehicle. The redhead would often kiss the driver before climbing down from the cab and strolling to her car as if she didn’t have a care in the world. The trucker would then be on his way.

And she was a nice girl doing nothing illegal? “Do you suppose she has a special interest in semis?” he said, more sharply than he’d intended.

“She’s not a whore,” Nora retorted, tucking a strand of hair back into her silver bun, “if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“Really?”

“We’re not naïve,” Nora protested, “but several truckers over the past several months have talked to us about Dee. They praise her like she’s a modern-day Florence Nightingale. They’re discreet, never going into detail, but it’s clear they’ll defend her any way they have to. They describe her in glowing terms as easy going, a good listener, fun to laugh with.”

“I bet. She must be worth a lot.”

“Nora already said the girl’s not a prostitute.” Raymond bristled. “Whatever Dee does with those guys, she doesn’t charge a dime.”

Scowling, Tom said, “How do you know that?”

“We were more than a little curious at first when we realized there was a pattern of a woman parking a car here to go off with truckers. We wanted to be sure we weren’t being misused.”

“And the truckers talk to you about her? About not paying?”

“I don’t think anyone is trying to hide much,” Nora pointed out. The sixty-something woman’s eyes sparkled. “The guys probably aren’t telling their wives about her, if they have wives.”

“But they tell you?”

Raymond chuckled. “People coming through the rest area seldom tell us their names.”

Tom checked his watch again. The Stevenses smiled at him. “Thanks, I’d better be going.”

Nora nodded. “She should be back soon. She’s usually quite punctual.”

“Another plus, I assume. She must have a lot of repeat customers if she’s so damn good.”

“They’re not customers, and she’ll only go off with a trucker once,” Nora responded.

“Once? You sure?” That didn’t compute at all. Repeat customers was the foundation of the prostitution trade.

“Once.” Nora clucked at him. “Doesn’t that make Dee even more mysterious, perhaps more special to the guys? She’s almost like a mirage.”

“Or a will-o’-the-wisp,” Raymond said with a trace of awe.

“Oh, I do hope you get to meet her, Detective. You’ll find out that what we’re saying is true.” Nora beamed at him. “I’m sure you’ll like our Dee.”

“You bet I’m going to meet her,” he grumbled.

Tom walked toward his car, which he’d left parked next to the rental. He’d meet Dee, all right. Only her name wasn’t Dee. It was Rosanne Falcon.

BLURB

Now in her late twenties, Rosanne Falcon’s life has finally come together—a Ph.D., a prestigious research job, and two exquisite lovers, one of each gender, to complete the package. The intense bond she shares with Simone Stone was augmented rather than broken when Simone met and married Boyd Roberts, and the three have forged a fulfilling polyamory relationship. More would only be trouble.

Widowed by a tragic accident several years earlier, Detective Thomas Walker is nearing retirement after twenty years on the police force and ready to change careers. Fully convinced the hot redhead who meets truckers at the rest area he’s staked out is a prostitute, he sets out to build his case against her. He is dead wrong, but each layer he uncovers of what she really does for a living challenges long held assumptions. Can he overcome his deep-seated bias to make room for what’s possible?

So much for a repeat hug… #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #RomanticSuspense #Sale #99¢ #MFRWAuthor

Welcome to Snippet Sunday – ten (or so) sentences from all your favorite romance authors! You’ll find them all at this Facebook Group every Sunday:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/SnippetSunday/

Picking up where we left off last week with The Heist, MF romantic suspense. Kara is meeting Ted – The Art Council Investigator – at the airport.

EXCERPT

Stepping out of the plane gangway into the waiting area, Ted Springs scanned the small crowd waiting to greet passengers over the heads of others disembarking in front of him. He spotted her immediately. She stood at the edge of the crowd and gave a tentative wave when she recognized him.

He nodded in return, trying to be patient with the older ladies ahead of him and a family with two young children. Wearing a simple pink dress that buttoned down the front and fell nearly to the knees, Kara Daniels looked both professional and sexy. Tossing dark hair over her shoulder, she looked much more collected than when he’d last seen her, but then this was not a surprise meeting.

His chest tightened as he neared her. Her breasts were as substantial as he’d remembered. He could still feel them crushing into his chest outside Alice’s office. That had been a shock—a shock he definitely wanted to re-experience.

Kara extended her hand in greeting. So much for a repeat hug.

BLURB

A Heist? A Murder? It’s villain’s choice.

A special-order art theft? Tedious, but seamless – until small town museum director Kara Daniels calls in the experts. Furious her favorite trio of priceless impressionist paintings has been stolen from its traveling exhibit on her watch, Kara is determined to save not only the paintings, but her future in the art world. She’ll stop at nothing to entrap the thief.

Ted Springs knows the underbelly of the criminal world a little closer than he might like—but he’s turned it to good advantage, first as a police officer, and now as detective for the Upper Midwest Arts Council. His job? To guarantee the security of the valuable paintings in the Council’s traveling exhibits.

Heat sizzles when Ted and Kara collide—can they work together, before it’s too late?

Did he remember their brief encounter? #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #RomanticSuspense #Sale #99¢ #MFRWAuthor

Picking up where we left off last week with The Heist, MF romantic suspense. The museum has just been broken into, but nothing was stolen. Kara is reflecting at the end of the day.

EXCERPT

Clearing her desk, Kara smiled recalling Sasha’s chauffeur-babysitter reference. Springs might need someone to drive him around, and she’d probably get Irving involved in that, but it was definitely her job to meet him at the airport and see that he was dealt with professionally. He wouldn’t want or need a babysitter.

She allowed her mind to wander to their first meeting in the Art Council’s Chicago offices. It had been a random event, an embarrassing experience. She’d barreled into him while exiting Alice Erikson’s office. Coming along behind her, Alice had made the introductions, saving an awkward moment as Kara disentangled herself from Ted’s arms. She’d never given their meeting much thought, other than to be aware he’d taken more time than needed to free her. She’d never expected to see him again.

Did he remember their brief encounter?

…a pall of suspicion #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #RomanticSuspense #Sale #99¢ #MFRWAuthor

Picking up where we left off last week with The Heist, MF romantic suspense. The museum has just been broken into, but nothing was stolen. Kara is reflecting at the end of the day.

EXCERPT

The museum had a different pulse on Mondays. Kara loved when it was just staff working on projects. They could shout from room to room and move about freely without worrying about disturbing visitors. But not this Monday.

She closed her eyes. The police had arrived around noon. She’d made her call to the Upper Midwest Arts Council just before lunch. Alice Erikson had been supportive of the museum’s plight, but she’d been equally assertive about sending out a security consultant to help them prevent any further incursions. After all, as she’d pointed out, the Council had investments to protect.

The quick move to provide assistance really didn’t surprise Kara. She would’ve done the same if their roles had been reversed. Still, she wasn’t thrilled with the turn of events. The entire day had cast a pall of suspicion over her and her staff. Even the police had discounted the entire unforced entry as a likely prank by an insider.

Full bodied, perhaps. Voluptuous… #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #RomanticSuspense #Sale 99¢

Picking up where we left off last week with The Heist, MF romantic suspense.

EXCERPT

Set Up: Kara and her curator have just completed their conversation about the break-in where nothing was stolen.

Kara smiled watching her curator saunter out of the office. Monday was their dress-down day, and Sasha was clad in overly tight work jeans and a tank top. For someone who wanted to maintain her privacy, Sasha seldom hesitated to dress provocatively.

Sasha could get by with tight jeans, or slinky outfits, or minis, with her petite frame. Heaving a sigh, Kara tried to keep her envy in check. Petite was hardly a word anyone would use to describe her self. Full bodied, perhaps. Voluptuous, if one was trying to be kind. At least she had the strength to help David and Irving unload shipping crates. Some of those weighed three hundred pounds or more, depending on the size of the painting and its frame, requiring dollies and the greatest of care. Sasha usually stood by recording and documenting crate numbers and contents.

Maybe it was their age difference. At twenty-six, Sasha could get by with most any fashion. Seven years older, Kara had fewer options. She shook her head, trying to refocus. It wasn’t age that made the difference—it was the difference in skirt and sweater size. Kara exhaled, letting go of fruitless comparisons.

EXCERPT

Set Up: Kara and Sasha are still puzzling over finding the museum unlocked…

Kara chuckled. “No, I do believe the soda cans were carried in. Maybe someone wanted us to know just how vulnerable this place is.” She scowled. “But who, and why? I thought we were supposed to have a fairly sophisticated computer system.”

“Not sophisticated enough,” Sasha huffed. “Maybe it was some computer geeks at the college trying to show off.”

“Maybe. I hope Ted Springs will be able to shed some light on those questions. Doesn’t look like the cops are going to do much. No theft, no damage. They have more significant crimes to deal with.” Kara checked her watch. “It’s been a long day. Why don’t you head out when you’re ready? I’ll walk around through the place with David while we close up. Thank god it’s a Monday and we didn’t have to be open to the public. I’ll check with you in the morning after I get back from the airport with Springs.”

Sasha smirked. “At least I don’t have to be his chauffer-slash-babysitter. See you.”
