“Don’t get your hopes up…” #EroticRomance #HolidayStory #MFRWHooks #LGBTQ

December 20, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

Welcome to MFRW Hooks, where the authors of Marketing for Romance Writers share snippets from their stories to entice you into wanting more. Be sure to click on the links at the end to travel!

When I and my husband first invented Meghan Keenan, we envisioned writing a sexy romp with lots of menage scenes, capitalizing on her bisexuality. We had no idea she’d hang around for so many books. We also were moved by the way she handles herself. She’s always up front with potential relationships about the fact that she’s bi and non-monogamous. What you see is what you get.

Her good friend in Las Vegas hasn’t got that sorted out yet, and now she finds herself in a relationship that’s turning serous but is missing a crucial piece of information…

BLURB

A ring for Christmas? Sometimes what you hope for and what you fear are one and the same.

In Las Vegas for a brief stint in a musical revue and ready for some uncomplicated sex with a kindred spirit, Meghan Keenan is only too happy to resume connections with her sometimes lover, Lisa Perkins.

But Lisa’s in a quandary. Her most recent boyfriend has suddenly become serious, with hints of a diamond ring in her future – and she’s never told him she’s bisexual. What if he freaks? What if he makes her choose?

Professional photographer Bryce Henry spends his days up close and personal with beautiful models and actresses. Now he’s deeply in love with Lisa and ready to pop the question, but even he wonders about long term fidelity. What does he want, and how bad does he want it?

What will happen when Meg takes hold of Lisa’s problem and runs with it?

EXCERPT

Set Up: Lisa and Meg have spent the afternoon making love, and now they’re sitting in Lisa’s kitchen. Lisa’s just let Meg in on her problem.

“Do you have any ideas?” Lisa continued. “I really don’t want to lose Bryce, but I won’t put myself in a situation where I can’t be faithful to my partner and to myself. I know you’ve helped several couples sort things out.”

“Don’t get your hopes up about what I can do. I’m no Houdini. I’ve been able to assist couples to discover what they wanted who maybe didn’t recognize it before. Maybe a little more than that. But I don’t work miracles. In the end, partners have to work out matters for themselves.”

Lisa dropped her gaze, and Meg could see more tears streak down her face. “Don’t look so dismayed. I didn’t say I wouldn’t try to help. We’ll put our heads together and see what’s possible.” Meg paused. “You do know, though, it’s at least possible that when Bryce learns you’re bi, he’ll walk away? I certainly don’t understand why, but that is a possibility.”

“That’s why I’m stymied. But Christmas is coming soon. I can’t wait much longer. I’ve got to find a way and let whatever happens happen.”

“You guys have been an item for a couple years, right?”

“Yes.”

“And you haven’t talked about your level of commitment?”

“We talk easily about lots of things. We’ve talked about loving each other. But we’ve never gotten explicit about what commitment means.”

“Interesting. Maybe Bryce is as conflicted about commitment as you seem to be. So do you think he’s been faithful to you these past two years?”

Lisa shrugged her shoulders. “I’m quite sure he’s not bi. But he is a highly sought-after photographer here in Vegas. He’s constantly putting portfolios together for showgirls, actresses and wannabe performers.” Lisa scrunched her mouth. “I think if he was constantly fucking his models, I’d hear about it through the grapevine. Has there been a dalliance now and then? I couldn’t say. I wouldn’t bet against it.”

“And that doesn’t bother you?”

“Maybe it should, but I’ve been with several women during that same time period.”

“Maybe you should be Bryce’s photography assistant…then you could share—just kidding.”

“So what do you think?” Lisa finally said. “Am I being stupid about all of this? Can you see a way out that doesn’t simply throw the last two years away?”

“No, I don’t think you’re being stupid. You have every right to be who you are. But you do seem to have dug a hole for yourself. Somehow, you’re going to have to find a way to share who you really are with the man you love. If you can’t do that with Bryce, then maybe he’s not the man for you.”

Meg watched Lisa fight back tears again and continued, not waiting for a response. “I think maybe I should invite Bryce to lunch to talk about having him do a photo shoot for me. That may give me at least a peek into what he’s thinking, if not what he’s doing. Does he know your ring size?”

“Yes.”

Blog Tour: The Redemption of Mattie Silks by Kimberly Burns #TheCoffeePotBookClub #BlogTour #WestwardExpansion #Historical #WomensFiction

December 19, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

BOOK INFORMATION

Book Title: The Redemption of Mattie Silks
Author: Kimberly Burns
Publication Date: October 25, 2023
Publisher: Thomas Bard Publishing
Page Length: 315
Genre: Historical Fiction

HISTORICAL RESEARCH OF THE UNDERWORLD

Painted ladies, soiled doves, jeweled birds… How do you research a historical topic that people didn’t like to talk about, referring to it in veiled terms?

My latest novel, The Redemption of Mattie Silks, is based on the true story of the Old West’s most successful madam and her feud with notorious con man Soapy Smith. While over one hundred books and magazine articles were written about Smith and his gang, less was written about Mattie and her shady ladies. To learn about these gals, I had to walk the streets (so to speak).

I visited three of the four museums of Old West prostitution. I prowled the avenues and allies of Denver and Skagway, Alaska. The staffs at the Denver Public Library and History Colorado, the state history museum, were wonderful about sharing their knowledge, resources, and opinions. I found and read eleven books on the topic. Finally I googled subjects like “contraception in 1800s” and “home remedies for STD.” I’m pretty sure that now I am on a government watch list as a big weirdo.

Through all this research, I did learn an eyebrow-raising a thing or two. For example, there was a strict hierarchy among the demimonde. Among those who sold themselves, parlor house fancy women sat atop that precarious pyramid. They were the most beautiful and well-mannered and were expected to be entertaining. They often began each evening acting as hostesses to gentlemen callers. In the front sitting room, they made conversation, played games, or performed music.

Parlor house madams ran their businesses as efficiently as any modern corporation. Mattie Silks realized she could charge a premium for healthy, clean, nicely dressed, well-fed girls. So she purchased elegant gowns for her ladies of the evening on credit. They paid her back from their wages. Mattie also offered her employees two meals a day, provided laundry service, and had a doctor on retainer who conducted monthly exams. This 1890s version of a benefits package was far better than factory workers received.

Below parlor houses were common brothels or bordellos where the women’s profit lay in volume. Living by the old adage that time is money, these gals burned seven-minute candles to signal the end of a gentleman’s visit.

At the bottom the social heap were crib girls who operated out of small rooms and streetwalkers who transacted business wherever they could. It was nearly impossible to improve one’s position on this career path. Most women “tumbled down the row,” moving to increasingly grimier circumstances as they aged and lost their good looks.

Not all goodtime girls were prostitutes. Hurdy-gurdy, saloon, and dancehall girls were paid for dancing and earned a percentage from the drinks they sold. However, some saloons had rooms upstairs where girls sold their favors. As a result, dancers developed a bad reputation. The saloon girls of Cripple Creek, Colorado, were so offended by the insulting assumption they were of loose morals they banded together and formed the Dance Hall Girls’ Protective Association. They wrote letters and petitioned the local government to recognize theirs as a legitimate occupation and not a crime. It must have worked. The police stopped arresting the dancers.

Old Hollywood movies glamorized and sanitized the lives of Old West working girls. In reality there were few career choices for females in the 1800s—school teacher, servant, nurse, prostitute, or wife. Although vice could pay the best, the life of a fallen angel was dangerous and short. Any woman considering a life of ill-repute had at least a thread of desperation running through her. As my character Mattie Silks believes, “Working as a madam was a profession, but working as a prostitute was an act of self-preservation.”

BLURB

Seeking redemption, she finds retribution

In 1892, running one of the West’s fanciest brothels is a rough game. In a town filled with brazen criminals, corrupt police, zealous politicians, and morality committees, Madam Mattie Silks makes her fortune catering to Colorado’s gold and silver millionaires.

Notorious crime boss “Soapy” Smith is at the top of the Denver underworld. There are no rules for Smith’s gang. They solve problems with bribes and bullets. When Mattie’s husband stumbles into Soapy’s dealings, she struggles to protect him.

Gold is discovered in the Yukon and Mattie seizes the opportunity for adventure and profit. But Skagway, Alaska, is even more lawless than Denver. Mattie must use all her business sense and street smarts to safeguard those she cares about. Will it be enough? Or will Lady Justice again turn a blind eye?

Based on a true story, The Redemption of Mattie Silks is an action-packed tale of a woman succeeding in a man’s world even when the cards are stacked against her.

“The research on the era shines through, as do the grit and spirit of the characters. …A colorful and enthralling journey.” ~ K.T. Blakemore, award-winning author of The Good Time Girls series

“A nice, nuanced portrait of the complex underworld with fine and witty turns of phrase. A great Western romp!” ~ Randi Samuelson-Brown, award-winning author of The Bad Old Days series

“You must’ve really been a bad boy…” #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #WeekendWritingWarriors #EroticRomance #LGBTQ #MFRWAuthors

BLURB

What is Carol up to now? Mack has always known his free-spirited wife is bisexual, but it seems she has new adventures on her mind this Christmas season.

Carol has long entertained fantasies of a threesome with herself, her husband, and their attractive nearby neighbor, Tara. Now that Tara’s troublesome ex is out of the picture, is this the season to make Carol’s fantasies come true?

Tara’s felt a little deprived since breaking things off with her ex, and she’ll admit she envies what Mack and her best friend Carol seem to share. If they invite her to join them, will she dare?

EXCERPT

Set Up: Carol, Mack, and Tara are unwrapping presents together by the Christmas tree.

Ten Sentences…

“Look, here are two more gifts…from Santa. One for me and one for Tara.” Carol gave Mack her best pout. “Sorry, honey, looks like Santa forgot you.” She winked at Tara. “We’ll have to try to make it up to Mack later.”

“So sorry, Mack,” Tara played along. “You must’ve really been a bad boy for Santa to leave you nothing.” She grinned at Carol. “But we good girls weren’t forgotten. What do you suppose Santa wanted to give us?”

And a little more…

“Let’s see.” Carol handed one light package to Tara and they both began to carefully pull at the tissue paper.

“Oh my,” Tara gasped. “Santa has sexy naughty taste.”

“He does, doesn’t he?” Carol held up a sheer pale white camisole and watched Tara do the same. “They match,” she said as if surprised.

Mack cleared his throat. “Wow.”

“Do you think Santa got the right sizes?” Carol looked at Tara.

Tara made a show of carefully examining the thin material. “Hard to tell. He must’ve forgotten to get us bottoms.”

LGBTQ+ Storytelling and a thriller from Patrick R. Field #Paranormal #Fantasy #LGBTQ+

December 15, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

On the fifteenth of every month I write a column on LGBTQ+ romance at the Sweet ‘n Sexy Divas blog. Today my guest is Patrick R. Field, with his latest release, Servant.

Here’s what readers are saying about this book:

“Finally, a story where a gay couple’s biggest issue ISN’T being gay.”

“It’s really gratifying to see a gay couple as the lead characters in a book who just ‘happen to be gay, and not a main plot point. Refreshing and a welcome addition to the gay fiction genre.”

I hope for a future in which what is true for this book can be true for all of us – that variations in sexual orientation are normal, unremarkable, and valued.

Head on over to his post to find out more:

Ménage? Polyamory? How about both? #EroticRomance #FFM #menage #polyamory #Excerpt #KU

December 14, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

Sometime back I was asked this question: Is there a difference between erotic menage romance novels and erotic polyamory romance novels? Here’s what I think:

Most of the erotic romance my husband and I write together involves sex scenes with three or more participants. Which label to place on them isn’t as straightforward as you might think, and people in the non-monogamous lifestyle might laugh at the effort to pigeonhole them.

Though many erotic romance readers and writers tend to think of “ménage” as simply meaning sex among more than two persons, the historic meaning of ménage (from the French) is “domestic establishment,” or “the persons of a household.” Naturally “ménage à trois” adds an enticing dimension, but it still technically implies a living together arrangement.

“Polyamory,” on the other hand, is somewhat simpler in its origin and implication: “Poly” means many, and “amory” means love. Polyamory is many loves. Easy? Not so much. There are what seem endless permutations and combinations of polyamory within the non-monogamous lifestyle. Some threesomes form an equilateral triangle, exclusively and equally committed to one another. Some couples view each other as their “primary,” but have additional loves outside the primary relationship, sometimes together, sometimes apart. And the list goes on.

My husband and I have written erotic romance that explores nearly all those possibilities. Our Swinging Games series chronicles the experience of a pair of empty-nest baby boomers who first dip their toes into the swing lifestyle, then embrace it fully across the fifteen (so far) stories in the series. Which label would those characters use? Though they sometimes have what might be called “casual sex,” they form loving relationships with some of their partners, and for a time they entered into a three-way relationship with another woman which we’re quite sure they would label “polyamory.”

An important additional dimension is whether or not any of the partners are bisexual.  Most of the women in our erotic stories swing both ways, so they tend to form FFM threesomes, whether short term or as their happy ending. In the Swinging Games series, some of the men are also bisexual, leading to additional combinations.

In short, in the real world, what to call it depends on how the participants define it, and there are more combinations and variations than can easily be categorized. What they all share in common, however, is the centrality of open and honest communication among all involved, a continuing effort to understand and meet the needs and desires of the participants, and a loving relationship, whether for the moment or long term. Oh, and need I mention, they share happiness, pleasure, and a wide range of sexual activities and combinations.

For readers who’d like to know more about “real” polyamory and ménage relationships, sex educator, author, and filmmaker Tristan Taormino has written a very straightforward and informative book about the open lifestyle and the intricacies involved:

Opening Up is available at this link:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0097DDYR2/

I highly recommend it.

My favorite among our polyamory offerings is The Reunion, winner of the 2014 Bi Writer’s Association award for Best Erotica. I’m comfortable calling its trio either ménage or polyamory, because it is both. By the end of the story, an equilateral triangle has evolved through a series of tugs and pulls, and all three partners are in love with and committed to each other. At least two of the partners never saw this coming, but I’m pretty sure it fulfilled the fondest dreams of the third partner, once she saw what might be possible. Her faith that it could happen was a crucial catalyst in its development.

BLURB

Dark and brooding, Adam Granger was always the bad boy out of reach—but now he’s in Sarah Atkinson’s bed, the morning after their twentieth high school reunion. When Adam beats a retreat to his Pacific Palisades estate, former good girl Sarah throws caution to the wind and pursues him.

Petite copper-skinned Maria Ramirez greets Sarah at Adam’s front door. The former exotic dancer doesn’t challenge Sarah’s assumption she’s the maid—how long will it take the dark-haired beauty to figure out Maria is Adam’s live-in lover? Better yet, how long before Maria can entice her into their bed?

Determined not to rock his hard-won lifestyle, Adam resolves to push Sarah past her sexual limits so she’ll leave. When she stays, he watches helplessly as the two women fall in love with each other. Will they shut him out? And, if they let him in, what must he sacrifice?

EXCERPT

“I’ve done the same old, same old for so long I nearly failed take the opportunity to fly out here,” Sarah said.

Maria flashed an eyebrow. “But you did, and you’re not disappointed.”

“Not at all.” Sarah squirmed closer. “You were worth the trip. And we may get Adam to come around. Imagine! I didn’t even know you existed until you met me at the door. If I hadn’t gotten up the nerve to come out here, we never would’ve met.”

“I like that word we.” Maria pecked at Sarah’s neck and hugged her tight. “You’re a pretty damn spunky lady. Adam Granger doesn’t stand a chance facing the two of us.”

“I’m not so sure,” Sarah said, fighting the feeling that all was not well in nirvana. “So, Maria, does Adam love you?”

Maria withdrew and scowled. “That’s not a word in his vocabulary. He cares for me more than he has for anyone, unless for the image of you.”

“Do you love him?”

Maria didn’t flinch. “Yes.”

“Yet you still take other women to your bed.”

“Yes. Loving a woman is quite different. I haven’t found a woman I could be true to.” She offered a quirky smile. “Yet.”

“Oh.” Sarah worked at staying calm while considering the import of Maria’s words. “But you wouldn’t give up Adam for the right woman.”

“No, the right woman would have to love him as much as me. All sides would have to have equal strength.”

“Like an equilateral triangle.”

“Exactly.”

“I wonder if that’s possible.”

Maria sighed. “Maybe it isn’t.”
