A First Nation Guest Blog Post: Twisted Beauty, by Maggie Blackbird @BlackbirdMaggie #LGBTQ #firstnationsromance #NativeAmericanromance #mmdystopianromance #MFRWAuthors

November 21, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

Today I’m thrilled to have as my guest author Maggie Blackbird, a fellow Extasy Books author whose stories I always eagerly await. An Indigenous Canadian herself, Maggie’s tagline is Romancing Canada’s Indigenous People one book at a time…

I always appreciate the sensitivity Maggie brings to both the First Nation experience and the prejudice and stumbling blocks faced by the many gay characters she writes.

A First Nation Guest Blog Post:

Twisted Beauty

One of my favourite movies is Mad Max II aka The Road Warrior.  It is a futuristic movie that takes place after modern society has fallen to the wayside.  Two characters I rooted for over Max were Wez and The Golden Youth, an evil pair on a motorcycle who wanted to lay claim to the gasoline Max was helping a community protect.

Another of my favourite movies is Thunderheart, about a modern-day Lakota community divided by corruption.  It takes place in the badlands of South Dakota.

And one of my favourite settings for historical romance novels is the wild west.  I love historical novels and read them like people eat candy, hah!

I combined all of these elements to create Twisted Beauty, a m/m dystopian romance starring a Lakota man and an Ojibway man.  Since I’m Ojibway, I enjoy researching and exploring other Indigenous nations, so it was fun to incorporate the male leads’ cultural beliefs and ceremonies into the novel.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it.

BLURB:

His community or his enemy.  He can’t have both.

Deep in the badlands, long after the fall of modern civilization, Hunter patrols the area as the war chief for his Lakota community.  His latest mission is to hunt down a marauder who robbed his neighbors of their precious goods.  He’ll act as this man’s judge, jury, and executioner.

Having lost everything at his former Ojibway encampment, Chassis is far from home.  He wanders the badlands, a grim reaper bringing death to those with what he needs to survive.  But there is one man courageous enough to challenge him.

When the duo faces off, neither expects the sizzling chemistry to erupt between them, nor for their duel to touch what both have denied themselves.  Now they must choose to either remain together and sacrifice their beliefs, or go their separate ways, losing what they’ve spent their lives searching for—love.

EXCERPT:

With each ginger step, the heels of Hunter’s boots cut into the soft mire. The lyrical sound of flowing water drifted to his position on the downslope of the channel.

As he brushed aside the branches, he kept his arm bent while holding the barrel to the .38 Special skyward. There was only half a moon, which didn’t help. The same for the tall trees hindering light from penetrating the canopy. Although he was enveloped in pitch-black and his sight had adjusted to the dark, he was forced to squint. For ten minutes, he’d stalked through the forest.

Closer. Getting much closer.

The scent of burnt coals lingered under his nose, although there was no sign of smoke.

Perspiration coated his upper lip. The pounding of his heart was reminiscent of the echoing beat from the sacred drum back at the community. Adrenaline. He’d faced this many times when having to kill someone. Also, it was the reality—he had no choice but to hunt vermin in the same manner the vermin preyed upon his people.

An owl hooted, and he froze. He whipped his head in the direction of the horned feathered bird seated in a tree, watching. This wasn’t good. Hinhán was the spirit of the dead. He swallowed. The dead only arrived for one reason…to lead someone to the dog star where his ancestors resided.

He shook his head.

Focus.

 He must focus.

Drawing in a breath, he repeated his earlier performance of squint straight ahead and then shift his gaze to the ground. There still wasn’t a hint of the marauder anywhere, but the fucker was here. Somewhere. He took another glance at the ground, continuing to ensure he didn’t snap or crush anything that could alert others to his presence. The bandana still wrapped his temples, and he’d donned his buckskin jacket because the temperature had dropped a good ten degrees. He’d also tucked his ponytail within the jacket to keep his hair out of the way.

He sidestepped a huge rock that enabled him to inspect the uneven, pebbled shoreline, and then glimpsed around his hiding spot.

Nothing. Just evidence of a campsite. During his one-mile trek, he’d seen no signs of the Mustang, but this was the marauder’s resting place for the night. He took in a water skin, flannel shirt, leather jacket, bedroll, backpack, and a rabbit in a wooden cage.

Rabbit?

Hmm, the furry critter must be the marauder’s dinner.

The deliberate snapping of a twig pricked Hunter’s ears. He whipped on his heel but was too late.

Author Bio:

An Ojibway from Northwestern Ontario, Maggie resides in the country with her husband and their fur babies, two beautiful Alaskan Malamutes.  When she’s not writing, she can be found pulling weeds in the flower beds, mowing the huge lawn, walking the Mals deep in the bush, teeing up a ball at the golf course, fishing in the boat for walleye, or sitting on the deck at her sister’s house, making more wonderful memories with the people she loves most.

BLURB

Always authentic, Assistant Mall Manager Joy Danser insists that her mall Santas must have real beards so children can believe. But even she is unprepared for the very real Santa who visits her bed invisibly this Christmas season. Is she dreaming, or has she gone mad? Joy consults Sophia Nardiz, manager of the Magical Gypsy shop at her mall. Sophia reads her palm and gives her a cryptic message: Joy is at a crossroads, and she must trust her intuition.

Owner of the Magical Gypsy chain and a true Gypsy himself, Nick Polaris is thrilled to play Joy’s Santa, in the mall and in her bed, but he knows it’s only a lark. For true love, he’ll need someone with Gypsy blood. Must he renounce the Scottish redhead he enjoys so much?

EXCERPT

Rated PG

Fuming, Joy swung her legs over the bed and padded toward the bathroom. Before she could reach the doorway, she collided against a broad chest. Strong arms encircled her to keep her from falling. A beard swept across the top of her head.

“I told you he’d say you were crazy.”

“Maybe I am.” She rested her cheek on his chest. “Don’t you ever wear clothes?”

“Why should I when I’m visiting you?” He slid his hands up under her night shirt until he cradled a breast in each hand. “I love your Elf shirt. Were you thinking of me when you put it on?”

“Yes,” she murmured. She shuddered when his lips mussed her hair. She peered up at him but saw nothing. His mouth settled across hers. His tongue traced her open mouth before exploring inside. She blinked. She was gone, just like that. She’d never been kissed more thoroughly. If he was a phantom, then he was also an expert lover.

“I’m pleased that I please you. I had many tutors. Of course, I wouldn’t mind if you kissed me back.”

“Oh. I was lost for a moment.” She poured her concentration into the kiss. She traced the little ridges along the roof of his mouth. She tapped and toyed with his tongue. She kissed the corners of his mouth and tugged playfully on his moustache.

“You are equally skilled.”

She giggled. “Must come naturally. I haven’t had that many tutors.”

“You are nothing but natural. You always are.”

EXCERPT

The waiter brought the souvlaki and more bread. After he left, I leaned forward and put my elbows on the table. “So what’s going on here? Why did you call me?”

Rick’s blue eyes dissected me. “Because there’s something unusual about you.”

Oh, please. That was as bad as ‘What’s your sign, baby?’ “Do I seem naive enough to fall for that line?”

“Not really.” He speared a chunk of lamb and dipped it in the creamy cucumber sauce. “That doesn’t make it any less true. And I think you really care about Lily Kimball, and what happened to her.”

“Then you believe something ‘happened.’” Remembering his outburst at the hospital, I added, “You think she was killed by someone. You even know who.” I watched his face for reaction.

“I suspect. I don’t know.” He took a long drink of water, as if he were trying to swallow something unpalatable.

“But you haven’t gone to the police.” He shook his head. “Why not?”

He started to answer and then Athena swept over, wanting to make sure everything was to her dear doctor’s satisfaction. She effused with grand passion about how wonderful Rick Paulsen was, as a medical professional and as a man, her praise transparently designed to convince me, as his dinner partner and potential life mate, of his worth. He squirmed as she continued, but seemed loath to interrupt her. Once we had assured her that everything was delightful, she withdrew at last, to observe from behind the cash register.

When he didn’t answer my last question, I asked again. “Why haven’t you gone to the police?”

“You don’t understand. The police won’t be any help in this matter.”

“They’re investigating her death—”

“They’re not investigating her death! They’re just going through the motions until everyone forgets about her and they can toss her file in a cabinet, never to be seen again!” He slapped his fork onto the table, a flush of anger suffusing his face, all the way to the tips of his ears. “Just like the others.”

BLURB

Looking for a fresh start, Sara Woods takes a job as a news reporter in a small town. Her first assignment for the Ralston Courier is to investigate of a string of deaths, all young women, all her age. To deal with chronic back pain, she seeks help at a local healing center. She soon becomes convinced that there is something strange about the Goldstone Clinic. Its doctors and nurses are all the picture of perfect beauty and health, while their patients at first seem to improve and then mysteriously deteriorate.

Dr. Rick Paulsen, a physician at the local hospital, offers to teach Sara how to access her internal power, enhancing hidden skills and revealing secrets from her past. Police officer Brendon Zale also takes an interest in Sara, watching her every move and trying to get close to her. The deeper she digs into the Goldstone, the harder it is to deny links to the paranormal. Can she figure out what is going on and who to trust before it’s too late?

Fifty is hardly old… #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #WeekendWritingWarriors #EroticRomance #LaterInLife #MFRWAuthors

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write – and read!
Click on the graphics to travel to the other snippets.

For the next three Sundays, I’ll be sharing snippets from my mid-life Christmas story The Reluctant Santa.

EXCERPT

Ten sentences…

Chapter One

Sitting at the restaurant table, Carol Hawkins looked up to see her best friend tap her cell for a message. Carol tried not to grimace as she glanced at Cliff Rutgers, the new man Sue Harper had decided to introduce to her—as if she was in the market for yet another man. Did he have any clue what Sue was up to? For sure Sue’s message would be urgent, and Sue would have to rush off to put out a fire of some sort, leaving Carol and Cliff to their own devices.

She loved Sue—they’d been through so much together, starting in college. Sue had been a rock when Carol’s husband died eight years ago. But Sue could have a one-track mind. Ever since the sixth anniversary of Harry’s death, Sue had decided it was time for Carol to step out and date again. Carol had heard the refrains over and over. Fifty is hardly old…Harry would want you to move on and continue living.

~

…and a little more:

It wasn’t exactly like she’d stopped living. She had a career, two kids, and so many volunteer activities she sometimes wondered how she could fit everything in. There wasn’t room for a man. She did miss the intimacy she and Harry shared—she missed it a lot. She just didn’t think it could ever be replicated.

REVIEW

5 Stars: “Loved it. This was a fun book with a great storyline.  Carol and Cliff had super hot chemistry that made this even better. They made for a steamy story. It’s a definite must read!”

Exile: a risky defiance, a perilous journey, a family’s tragic choice – or an individual’s final gamble to live. Exile: voluntary or enforced, a falling-out between friends, a lost first love, a prejudiced betrayal – or the only way to survive persecution?

In this historical fiction anthology thirteen authors (they are not superstitious!) have written exclusive short stories on the theme of exile. Some are based on true history, others are speculative fiction. All mine the depths of human emotions: fear, hope, love, and the fortitude to survive.

Join an inspiring Anglo-Saxon queen of Wales, a courageous Norwegian falconer, and a family fleeing back in time to escape the prospect of a ruthless future. Oppose the law with the legendary Doones of Exmoor, or defy the odds with two brave WWII exiles. Meet a Roman apprehensively planning exile to preserve the ‘old ways’, and a real Swedish prince forcibly expelled in heart-wrenching circumstances. Thrill to a story based on the legend of Robin Hood, sail with a queen of Cyprus determined to regain her rightful throne; escape religious persecution, discover the heart-rending truth behind the settlement of Massachusetts and experience the early years that would, eventually, lead to the founding of Normandy. Experience the stirring of first love, and as an exclusive treat special guest author, Elizabeth Chadwick, reveals a tale about the 12th-century’s heiress, Isabelle de Clare, and the Greatest Knight of all time – William Marshal.

With an introduction by multi-award-winning author Deborah Swift, enjoy these tales of exile across the ages. Some are hopeful, some sad, some romantic, some tragic, but all explore the indomitable spirit of resolute, unforgettable characters

DEBORAH SWIFT is a delver into archives, drinks too much tea, and loves antiques and old buildings. Her sturdy, stone-built house used to be the village primary school, and from her window she has a view of a few 17th century cottages, and behind those, green fields dotted with grazing sheep.

Historical fiction was a natural choice for Deborah as a writer because she always enjoyed the research aspect of design – poking about in archives and museums, not to mention the attraction of boned bodices and the excuse to visit old and interesting buildings.

She used to work as a set and costume designer for theatre and TV, so enjoys the research aspect of creating historical fiction.  In her books Deborah likes to write about extraordinary characters set against the background of real historical events. Her first novel was The Lady’s Slipper which was shortlisted for the Impress Prize, and her book The Poison Keeper, about the Renaissance poisoner Giulia Tofana, won the BookViral Millennium Award. She has written eighteen novels to date including two series set in WWII – her latest, The Shadow Network is due for release in early 2024.

Deborah lives in North Lancashire on the edge of the Lake District,  and divide her time between teaching and writing.

She was also shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Award in 1998 for The Champion, in 2001 for Lords of the White Castle, in 2002 for The Winter Mantle and in 2003 for The Falcons of Montabard. ELIZABETH ST.JOHN’s critically acclaimed historical fiction novels tell the stories of her ancestors: extraordinary women whose intriguing kinship with England’s kings and queens brings an intimately unique perspective to Medieval, Tudor, and Stuart times.

Inspired by family archives and residences from Lydiard Park to the Tower of London, Elizabeth spends much of her time exploring ancestral portraits, diaries, and lost gardens. And encountering the occasional ghost. But that’s another story.

Living between California, England, and the past, Elizabeth is the International Ambassador for The Friends of Lydiard Park, an English charity dedicated to conserving and enhancing this beautiful centuries-old country house and park. As a curator for The Lydiard Archives, she is constantly looking for an undiscovered treasure to inspire her next novel.

Elizabeth’s books include her trilogy, The Lydiard Chronicles, set in 17th Century England during the Civil War, and her medieval novel, The Godmother’s Secret, which explores the mystery of the missing Princes in the Tower of London.

HELEN HOLLICK and her husband and adult daughter moved from north-east London in January 2013 after finding an eighteenth-century North Devon farmhouse through being a ‘victim’ on BBC TV’s popular Escape to The Country show. The thirteen-acre property was the first one she was shown – and it was love at first sight. She enjoys her new rural life, and has a variety of animals on the farm, including Exmoor ponies, dogs, cats, hens, ducks and geese and her daughter’s string of show jumpers.

First accepted for publication by William Heinemann in 1993 – a week after her fortieth birthday – Helen then became a USA Today Bestseller with her historical novel, The Forever Queen (titled A Hollow Crown in the UK) with the sequel, Harold the King (US: I Am the Chosen King), novels that explore the events that led to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Her Pendragon’s Banner Trilogy is a fifth-century version of the Arthurian legend, and she also writes a pirate-based nautical adventure/fantasy series, The Sea Witch Voyages, where you can read more about Jesamiah Acorne, son of Charles St Croix – and the Doones.

Despite being impaired by the visual disorder of Glaucoma, she is also branching out into the quick read novella, ‘Cosy Mystery’ genre with the Jan Christopher Mysteries, set in the 1970s, with the first in the series, A Mirror Murder incorporating her, often hilarious, memories of working for thirteen years as a library assistant.

Her non-fiction books are Pirates: Truth and Tales and Life of a Smuggler. She also runs a news and events blog and a Facebook page for her village, and supports her daughter’s passion for horses and showjumping – and occasionally gets time to write…

LORETTA LIVINGSTONE had no intention of writing anything but short stories or poetry, and especially not historical fiction. She stated it quite clearly on social media, only to suddenly find herself writing … historical fiction. Her debut novel, Out Of Time, set in the mythical Sparnstow Abbey, was shortlisted for the Historical Novel Society Indie Award in 2016, which stunned and elated her in equal measures.

It was supposed to be a one-off. It wasn’t. She went on to write two more stand-alone novels in the series; A Promise to Keep and Blossom on the Thorn. She had plans for more but has had ME for many years, and ill health has temporarily reined in her gallop. However, she intends to write again soon…

Her other books include short story collections and poetry, and can be found on Amazon.

MARIAN L. THORPE Taught to read at the age of three, words have been central to Marian’s life for as long as she can remember. A novelist, poet, and essayist, Marian has several degrees, none of which are related to writing. After two careers as a research scientist and an educator, she retired from salaried work and returned to writing things that weren’t research papers or reports.

Marian’s first published work was poetry, in small journals; her first novel was released in 2015. Her award-winning Empire’s Legacy series is historical fiction of another world, based to some extent on northern Europe after the decline of Rome.

In addition to her novels, Marian has read poetry, short stories, and nonfiction work at writers’ festivals and other juried venues.

Her other two passions in life are birding and landscape history, both of which are reflected in her books. Birding has taken her and her husband to all seven continents, but these days she’s mostly content to move between Canada and the UK.

“You look quite pleased with the memory…” #EroticRomance #LGBTQ #HolidayRomance #MFRWHooks

With five Holiday titles to promote this season, I’m getting an early start. Santa’s Boss is one of my favorites – a little Gypsy magic, some time travel, the power to be invisible… and with any luck, three can join the happy ending.

EXCERPT – PG

“You say this phantom came to you while you were having sex with your boyfriend.”

Joy nodded across the tiny round table at Sophia Nardiz. She couldn’t believe she was having this conversation, but how could she expect the woman to help if she didn’t know what had happened? “Yes. He entered me from behind while I had Ted in my mouth.”

“Interesting. And you never said anything to your boyfriend.”

Trying not to scratch at her eyes, Joy inhaled the rich incense filling the room. “I didn’t know what to tell him.” She realized that must sound lame.

Sophia pushed back dark tresses of hair from her shoulder. She smiled as if she knew a secret. “Have you ever had two cocks before?”

Blanching, Joy shook her head.

“And this visitor claimed to be Santa Claus.”

“That’s right. I felt his beard and mustache.” Joy shuddered.

“I’m sure you did. You look quite pleased with the memory.”

“I must be crazy,” Joy wailed. “You must think I’m nuts for sure.”

“Don’t say that, girl.” Sophia cradled Joy’s hand and Joy experienced an immediate calm spreading over her body. “What you describe is quite plausible.” Sophia smiled thinly. “You have too many aches—pleasant aches—for this to be something only in your mind. It could be someone with psychokinesis and telepathic powers. Rare, but not impossible. I have known persons with such powers.”

“You don’t think I’m crazy.”

“Not at all. I believe you must be very special to have received such a gift.”

“But you don’t think it was Santa?”

“Does that matter? Someone thinks very highly of you to want to nurture your belief, maybe not in Santa only, but in a world beyond that which you typically know. In my culture, we’d say you were blessed.”
