“Suspenseful, intriguing and truly romantic!” #RomanticSuspense #KU #IndiePub #HorseRacing #Thoroughbred #SportsRomance

January 29, 2024 by Adriana Kraft

Most of the books Mr. Kraft and I write together are steamy erotic romance, typically (but not always) featuring bisexual women. But that’s not where we got our start. When I started this year-long backlist review in my New Years Day blog post HERE, I noted that we accomplished our first goal – to be a published author – in 2005, with a contract for publication in 2007.

That novel is in our other major genre, romantic suspense, where we typically feature a romance between a man and a woman. In the beginning, we attempted to keep a different pen name for each of the two genres, but this quickly became cumbersome, and we brought all our work together under our “Adriana” name in short order.

The press that first released Willow Smoke in 2007 was sold in 2012, so when we received our rights back, we brought it out under our indie imprint in 2014.

Willow Smoke is actually Book Three in our four-book suspense series set in the horse racing industry, Riders Up, but it was the one we polished first, before the other three were fully fleshed out. Each of the books can be read as a standalone, and they can be read in any order.

WHY WILLOW?

When we lived in northern Minnesota, our forty acres included a small marshy area that grew willow shrubs. Following my mother’s custom, I always cut some branches early each spring and set them in a vase inside to open as pussy willows, usually the first blossoms of the year. My husband dabbled in wood carving while we lived there, and gnarled willow sticks made inviting projects to carve, sand, and stain.

Enter Daisy Matthews, the waif Cassie rescued through her Chicago group home job in Riders Up, Book One. By Book Three, Daisy is tall and lanky and holding her own as an assistant trainer at Chicago’s Arlington Park Racetrack.

We did not have a title when we began writing this book, but we did know our characters. The much older Nick Underwood has left the stock market, where he made a killing, and he now runs a small company crafting handmade wooden canoes. When he first encounters Daisy in the Arlington Park track barn, he doesn’t know her name, but he’s struck by her smoky eyes and her tall willowy frame. He decides to call her Willow. Our title was born, but we had no idea how important this small shrub genus would become in our story.

As the story gradually made its way onto the page, we sent Nick and Daisy on a canoeing trip to northern Minnesota’s boundary waters, which we so often enjoyed ourselves. On their way home, he stops at a friend’s home (forty acres and a farmhouse, imagine that!). Daisy has often watched Nick working the wood at his shop, and his friend finds an appropriate willow stick and talks her into getting started carving it.

I won’t give away the story’s ending here – I’ll just say that Daisy’s willow stick plays an important role when the chips are down.

REVIEWS

Five stars at Amazon “Adriana Kraft has created memorable characters that linger long after the story has ended and I’ve closed the book. She has done what an author should—brought me into the book’s world and made me care about the characters so that my world will not be the same as before their foray into it.” Sheila G.

Five stars at Goodreads “Suspenseful, intriguing and truly romantic! What a fabulous story of the blending of two worlds… the plot twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat and the pages turning.” Risha C “…dreams can become reality, love can transcend age… Exciting, engaging and very entertaining story. The character interplay is spot on and the story is extremely well written.” Donna H.

BLURB

When the chips are down, there’s nobody there.

Apprentice horse trainer Daisy Matthews grew up on the streets of Chicago, and if she learned anything, it was that she could count on no one to help her, ever. She knows she has to tough it out, protect herself, and when necessary, protect anyone she cares about. All by herself. No one else will do it for her.

Wealthy businessman Nick Underwood receives a thoroughbred in payment for a bad debt and is thrust into Daisy’s world.  She teaches him about horse racing; he teaches her about love.  When Daisy’s seamy brother-in-law threatens Nick’s safety, she doggedly tries to stop him by herself, but flees to the familiar streets when he attacks. Can Nick find her in time – and if he does, will she still want him?

EXCERPT

Set Up: An interloper has appeared at the stall where Daisy is soaking her horse’s front legs to cool them.

“So tell me,” Nick said, “where can I find a horse named RainbowBlaze?”

“RainbowBlaze!” Daisy gasped and glared at him again. “Why? What do you want with her?”

“Damn, you’ve got to be the most protective woman I’ve ever encountered. If you must know, she’s my horse.”

Daisy opened her mouth as if to speak. She glanced quickly at the chestnut mare. “There must be a mistake,” she stammered. “RainbowBlaze belongs to Michael Barnes.”

Nick crossed his legs and leaned against the stable wall, giving Daisy Matthews a slow satisfied smile. He’d found his horse. And he had a new employee. This could be more interesting than he’d imagined.

Furthermore, being his employee made Matthews safe to be around. He had a firm rule against personal involvements with employees. He flashed a look at the slender woman’s nipples that showed faintly through an orange tank top. Didn’t she know what she looked like?

Too young. He closed his eyes. He might be old enough to be her father. His eyes sprang open and he appraised her again. Maybe, maybe not.

“The horse did belong to Michael Barnes.” Fright flickered across the blonde’s face and quickly disappeared behind a steely gaze. “Mike’s fallen on bad economic times. Turned out he couldn’t pay his debts. Showed up at my office with a bill of sale for some damn race horse and begged me to take it to clear what he owed me. Against my better judgment, I agreed.” Nick raised his open palms upward. “So, here I am.”

Daisy’s hands, resting at her sides, curled into fists.

“You look like you’d like to slaughter me for your supper.” Nick stood. Ignoring the woman, he pointed at the horse with the oversized socks. “So I take it this is RainbowBlaze.” He glanced back over his shoulder at the woman. She gulped and nodded. “Is the horse any good? How much can I get for her?”

Daisy sputtered and Nick suppressed a laugh.

“She’s a damn good mare. She’ll run her heart out for you, if you treat her right. But she won’t work just for anyone.”

“Sounds like you’ve got a thing for my horse, kid.”

“Suppose so.” Daisy studied the dirt at her feet. “I’ve known her since she was foaled. Was there to help her mother give birth. I’ve been there every step of the way when Rainbow was with Cassie Travers, and then when Michael Barnes bought her it was with the understanding that she’d come to Sam’s barn and be with me.”

When the woman stopped to catch her breath, Nick said, “You didn’t answer my question. How much is she worth?”

Daisy shrugged. “Maybe,” her voice quaked, “fifty thousand. Maybe more.”

“Hmm. Michael said a hundred grand.”

He watched the spirit flow out of the young woman. Her glistening eyes grabbed at something inside him that he hadn’t experienced for a long time. Not thinking, he reached for her chin.

“That horse,” he said softly, “means a lot more to you than a hundred grand, doesn’t it?”

Just Released! Accidental Contact ~ Sapphic short story by @AdrianaKraft #LGBGTQ#LesbianFiction #SapphicFiction #EroticRomance #NewYorkCity #Snowbound #New Release #AgeGap #99cents #MFRWAuthor

November 3, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

What romantic pairings do you love to read? Straight f/m? Bisexual f/f/m? Lesbian f/f? I’m half of the writing duo Adriana Kraft, and we love writing (and reading) all these pairings. Our newest release is a sapphic short story we wrote for an anthology over a decade ago, then revised and updated to release under our indie imprint. Is it really erotic romance? It’s definitely erotic, featuring one of my favorite f/f scenes as Natalie is caught between her fears and her desires in the middle of the night. Since it’s a short story, I’d call it happy-for-now, with a promising future.

EXCERPT

Chapter One

Sitting in bed with the covers pulled up to her neck, Natalie Powers glanced up at the sound of her roommate’s voice.

“It’s already snowing.” Bridgette Allen ran the brush through her long blonde hair and glanced over at the bed. “Think we’ll make it out of here in the morning?”

Natalie tried to decipher the younger woman’s soft smile. Was Bridgette disappointed at the prospect of being stuck with her in New York City an extra day or two? “Doesn’t look promising.” She muted the TV. “If the weatherman’s right and the City gets ten to fifteen inches—plus wind—there probably won’t be any planes flying. I’ll check in the morning, but I’ll be surprised if we get out of here at all tomorrow. I’m sorry. Did you have a big weekend planned back home?”

“Don’t be sorry. It’ll be fun getting caught here for a day or two.” Bridgette’s voice suddenly sounded brighter. “Maybe we can walk over to Rockefeller Center and watch the skaters. Whatever we do, let’s not mope around worrying about finding a flight.” She set down the hairbrush and puckered her lips at her reflection in the mirror. “I like to believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe we both deserve a mini vacation.”

“You may be right.” Natalie yawned. “Three days listening to lectures has been grueling.”

Bridgette turned to face Natalie, brows slightly raised and a smile threatening the corners of her mouth.

Natalie couldn’t resist a smile in return. “I’ll try to be upbeat about our plight. We won’t get back to Chicago until the airports open.”

“So…” Bridgette checked the buttons on her powder-blue silk pajamas while brushing a piece of fluff off the gentle rise of a breast. “We might as well enjoy ourselves.”

“Maybe we could visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art,” Natalie said, trying to keep the mood light while Bridgette settled under the covers. “I haven’t been there for a couple years.”

BLURB

Natalie and the much younger Bridgette are real estate agents who’ve often traveled together for business seminars.

Now they’re snowbound in New York City in a hotel room with only one bed. Will Natalie dare to make her move?

EXCERPT

For three months, Natalie had eagerly anticipated this trip. She’d bought a pair of pink silk pajamas, wanting to feel a little more presentable and desirable. Pink had always gone well with her dark hair. And she’d come to believe that Bridgette’s choice of silk pajamas was perfect—not too seductive, not too revealing—but classy. Not klutzy like her old sleepwear that resembled sweatpants and gym clothes. On top of that, the feel of silk against flesh was incredibly sensuous.

At least she didn’t have to guess whether Bridgette was into women. She’d never tried to hide that fact. She’d even bemoaned not having found a partner with whom she really wanted to share a lot of time.

Natalie balled her fingers into fists. She’d made the effort to tidy up her pubic hair just in case. She swallowed hard. She couldn’t risk rejection. She’d done all she could. It was up to destiny now. What had Bridgette said? Everything happens for a reason. Maybe the blizzard was heaven sent just for her—just for her and Bridgette.

She blinked back tears. Even a blizzard wouldn’t be enough to fuel her courage. She dozed. Morning couldn’t come too quickly.

EXCERPT

Groggily, Natalie peeked at the red numerals on the hotel clock. Midnight—they’d only been in bed for an hour.

Her eyes blinked wide open. There was a hand on her breast. She wiggled her fingers. The hand was definitely not hers. She held her breath, taking stock of her situation.

Steady breathing warmed the back of her neck. She was in danger of becoming intoxicated with Bridgette’s scent. She squirmed her bottom only to discover something solid—Bridgette’s torso, curved around hers. Fortunately, they were about the same height.

Natalie couldn’t discern whether Bridgette was awake or if she was sleepwalking in bed. She rechecked the clock. It had taken her nearly five minutes to assess her situation, and she still wasn’t sure what was happening. Her breathing faltered. She did know her nipples were growing incredibly restless.

Shutting her eyelids, she withdrew into her body to concentrate on one particular nipple. The one Bridgette’s thumb lay within an inch of.

Careful not to move any other part of her body, Natalie placed her hand over Bridgette’s. Natalie tensed, but Bridgette didn’t jerk away. The breathing on the tiny hairs of her neck remained steady.

Cautiously, Natalie moved their hands lower until Bridgette’s fingers curled around her boob. Arching back her neck, Natalie encouraged those fingers to curl tighter around the silk fabric concealing her breast. Reflexively, she nestled her butt closer to Bridgette, and Bridgette’s body undulated slightly, responding to the accidental contact.

Natalie lay for long minutes not daring to move. She tried to calm raging emotions. Finally, she resorted to breathing in tandem with Bridgette. That worked. She relaxed a bit.

She became keenly aware of Bridgette’s breasts crushed against her back. She blinked—they must’ve been there all along. She’d been so needy about her own breasts she hadn’t even noticed Bridgette’s. Where was Bridgette’s other hand? Without turning to look, Natalie decided it must be somewhere on the pillow above her head.

The room had suddenly turned incredibly hot. Natalie smacked her lips. Taking great care not to disturb Bridgette’s side of the covers, she inched the blankets down nearly to her waist. The cooler air did nothing to quell the fire raging inside her.

What had he concluded? Embracing Passion #EroticRomance #Polyamory #MFRWHooks

October 4, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

A single wrong assumption can be costly…

I’m so excited about my most recent release! Embracing Passion has been a long labor of love – the finale to the Passion series, set in a fictional center for sex studies and sexuality.

EXCERPT

Set Up: Today’s scene follows shortly after last week’s college campus lecture scene.

New York, New York 2014

Shuddering slightly, Rosanne settled back against the pillows and pulled the covers up to her neck. She’d done amazingly well after she’d seen Detective Walker sneak into the lecture hall. A lesser woman might’ve panicked, but she had nothing to hide. Thank goodness Anna was there to help take up the slack when she’d needed time to think.

What had he concluded about her? She hugged herself. He certainly had seen a different side of her than that initial impression in the parking lot. Did he think her a chameleon? That might not be terrible. At most lectures, she’d encouraged questioners not to use her title, but not tonight. She’d wanted him to hear over and over that she was indeed Dr. Rosanne Falcon, a competent, professional woman.

He’d been quite impressive sitting in the back row looking pensive and serious. She’d noticed him laughing several times. It was good to know that Detective Walker could laugh. She’d scanned across his area of the hall when she acknowledged she was bisexual. That didn’t seem to faze him in the least. Maybe he already knew that. He probably already had a Center catalogue, or at least had been to the Center’s web page.

She chuckled softly. Would he order any Center videos? Would he wear out his DVD machine playing and replaying her scenes?

BLURB

Now in her late twenties, Rosanne Falcon’s life has finally come together—a Ph.D., a prestigious research job, and two exquisite lovers, one of each gender, to complete the package. The intense bond she shares with Simone Stone was augmented rather than broken when Simone met and married Boyd Roberts, and the three have forged a fulfilling polyamory relationship. More would only be trouble.

Widowed by a tragic accident several years earlier, Detective Thomas Walker is nearing retirement after twenty years on the police force and ready to change careers. Fully convinced the hot redhead who meets truckers at the rest area he’s staked out is a prostitute, he sets out to build his case against her. He is dead wrong, but each layer he uncovers of what she really does for a living challenges long held assumptions. Can he overcome his deep-seated bias to make room for what’s possible?

She was the sexiest woman in the room… Embracing Passion #NewRelease #EroticRomance #Polyamory #MFRWHooks

EXCERPT

Set Up: Having checked out the Center’s website from Rosanne’s business card, the detective has decided to drop in on a lecture at a college campus…

New York, New York 2014

Sitting in the back row of the small lecture hall, Tom Walker had a difficult time believing that the conservatively dressed, articulate, non-threatening woman explaining the hazards of sexually transmitted diseases was the same provocative woman he’d confronted at the rest area parking lot.

The hall was half-filled, with possibly two thirds of the audience female. Initially it had held a distinct air of tension, but Rosanne Falcon’s quick wit and sense of humor had helped relax the mood of the crowd. Clearly, Falcon and her co-presenter, Anna Jackson, were quite experienced at working a crowd. Jackson, with a nursing background, had been reassuring about how women and men could protect themselves and obtain treatment if they failed to do so. She came across very matter-of-fact, almost motherly.

He figured Jackson had to be in her forties. Taller than Falcon, the brunette was somewhat larger in build—not overweight, but leaning that way a little. She looked like money. The rings on her fingers reflected in the light, and he knew enough about women’s fashion to be aware the pantsuit she wore was probably tailored. All in all, pleasant looking, and knew how to dress for her size.

But Anna Jackson didn’t catch his imagination like Rosanne Falcon did. Hardly anything about Rosanne’s simple one-piece blue dress was sexy, yet she was the sexiest woman in the room. Was it her poise? It wasn’t her oversized loop earrings. Maybe it was her confident smile. She knew she had everyone’s attention.

Even his presence had only caused a momentary blip. He’d purposely come into the hall after he heard her begin to introduce herself and Anna. She hadn’t appeared shocked when he took his seat. By then she was already on cruise control. She had no doubt put him aside as a problem to deal with later.

Along with everyone else, he’d laughed when she’d informed them that the slide presentation was PG rated; if they’d been expecting X-rated materials, they’d be disappointed. She and Jackson shared several slides loaded with data on sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. There’d been a brief overview of the Center and its mission with a few slides of staff sitting around tables and working at computers. A couple slides of instructional DVD covers were at least suggestive. The slide that brought the biggest gasp of surprise, then titters and whispers, showed a table with a vast array of sex toys.

Clearly amused by the audience’s response, Falcon had quipped, “Don’t laugh. Some of those can be a woman or man’s second-best friend. Ladies, how many of you own at least one vibrator?”

A few hands went up, then many more. She’d laughed and clapped her hands. “Our research data suggests that the percentage is probably a little higher than that. Sorry if I embarrassed anyone.”

BLURB
