BLURB

Always authentic, Assistant Mall Manager Joy Danser insists that her mall Santas must have real beards so children can believe. But even she is unprepared for the very real Santa who visits her bed invisibly this Christmas season. Is she dreaming, or has she gone mad? Joy consults Sophia Nardiz, manager of the Magical Gypsy shop at her mall. Sophia reads her palm and gives her a cryptic message: Joy is at a crossroads, and she must trust her intuition.

Owner of the Magical Gypsy chain and a true Gypsy himself, Nick Polaris is thrilled to play Joy’s Santa, in the mall and in her bed, but he knows it’s only a lark. For true love, he’ll need someone with Gypsy blood. Must he renounce the Scottish redhead he enjoys so much?

EXCERPT – PG

Sophia and Joy have just shared their first lovemaking.

“Who said anything about moving in?” Sophia shook her head. “I may be too fatigued for this conversation. Oh! You think I still live with Nick, don’t you?”

“You don’t?”

“Not for two years or so.”

“Why not?”

Sophia sobered. “Nick needs to find a wife and have a family…”

“…I can’t have children. I love Nick and always will. But our people expect, need him to have heirs.”

“Oh.”

“We still get together now and then, but we’re clear about what we have and don’t have.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“That’s fate.” Sophia shrugged. “So Nick’s not a problem for you or for us.”

“Apparently.” Joy shuddered. “In an off handed way, he asked to escort me to the Christmas Ball. I thought he was kidding.”

“Nick doesn’t do off handed very well. He only says what he means.”

“But he’s looking for a wife.” Joy felt her eyes round. “I’m not wife material.”

Sophia laughed. “I could debate that, but you don’t have to worry. Nick can only marry a woman with at least some gypsy blood. You don’t have gypsy blood do you?”

“No. I highly doubt that. So that makes me safe. I’m Scottish through and through.

Gardens: Mine, and my heroine’s #Gardening #RomanceHeroine #EroticRomance

November 27, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

Most of the year here in the southern Arizona desert, “gardening” consists of either (a) nothing, or (b) moving landscape rock around. Having spent many years in the upper Midwest, I miss so many of my perennials – the snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, iris, peonies, and hostas I kept in several beds. None of those would survive here.

So I always welcome the moment when I can get my hands in the dirt again and cultivate growing things.

Thankfully, now is the season for setting a potted plant in the ground, and now is when our Desert Marigolds send up what seems like thousands of seedlings in front of the house.

I’ve nursed a fledgling bougainvillea in its pot through two summers and one winter. It’s finally happy and established enough to be set in the earth. We spent a week digging the hole – with our hard soil, the process consists of soaking the spot with water, waiting a couple days, digging down 4 or 5 inches, then repeating the process – to 10 inches, for this one. But it’s planted and thriving.

And the marigolds? Here’s a photo from a few years back. They’re a major natural wildflower throughout much of the Sonoran Desert, and our plot was seeded with them when we moved in. I quickly learned that unless I thin them as they emerge, I’ll have a messy non-lovely patch of tangle. Since they pop up everywhere, each year I decide where I want them to end up, then rake the rocks over the spots where I don’t want them, uprooting the sprouts. This year, they’ll circle the white Oleander we just planted out front as well.

Most of the characters in my novels are too busy with other things to spend time gardening, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like gardens. Here’s a scene from a recent release, Smoldering Passion. Melissa lives in a walk-up apartment in Brooklyn, but she’s only a few blocks from the beautiful Brooklyn Gardens, where she often escapes when she needs a break.

EXCERPT

Melissa stood and rotated her shoulders. She had to get out of her apartment. It was a beautiful day, and she didn’t want to spend it all inside.

She grabbed her keys and some cash and headed down the stairs to street level. She walked briskly, suddenly knowing where she wanted to be.

Shortly, she turned in at the entrance to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and slowed her pace, pausing to watch the ducks in the Japanese water garden. This was space for relaxing – for breathing deeply, soaking in colors and breezes and scents. The riot of spring blooms was long gone, and summer was at its peak.

She headed for the Shakespeare Garden and was relieved to find a shady bench empty in a secluded corner. Daisies, black-eyed Susans, and daylilies formed a casual cluster in yellow, white, and orange beside the bench. Further off, some taller mauve blooms she couldn’t name were full of butterflies, and a curly-headed toddler ran up to them laughing gleefully. The child’s parents stood nearby, holding hands, happy, as if they had no care in the world.

Her passion smolders. Will it ignite?

When art student Melissa Hopkins finally unpacks the two boxes her Aunt Phoebe left for her and sees Phoebe’s black and white photos, it’s like opening Pandora’s Box. A simple quest to find a new job morphs into an about face—not just in her art, but in her career and personal life. Sworn off women after a disastrous relationship, Center Director Harry Gage ignores the danger signals and hires the striking young woman who reminds him of his former lover. Her air of innocence will captivate center viewers, so he’s sure she’ll be a hit on camera. What he’s not prepared for is how she pierces his heart.

He didn’t give her time to rethink… #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #WeekendWritingWarriors #EroticRomance #LaterInLife #MFRWAuthors

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write – and read!
Click on the graphics to travel to the other snippets.

For two more Sundays, I’m sharing snippets from my mid-life Christmas story The Reluctant Santa.

EXCERPT

Cliff and Carol have just finished the lunch Carol’s friend paid for.

Ten sentences…

Cliff let the silence go on a bit longer than was comfortable. “Okay, I guess one of us has to take the leap. We could leave and I could wait two or three days before calling you, wondering if you’d want to get together again. That seems like jumping through a lot of unnecessary hoops and added stress. We either want to get to know each other better or we don’t. Frankly, I find you intriguing, and I’d like to spend more time with you. I’m sure that wasn’t very romantic. I’m afraid I lean toward the practical too much at times.”

Carol absentmindedly wet her lips as if debating whether or not to take that leap. She nodded.

And a little more…

“Sure. Actually, I appreciate practical. I find it to be a rare commodity in the men I’ve met.“

He noted she hadn’t commented on romantic. “I take it that was at least a lukewarm yes about getting together again.” He didn’t give her time to rethink. “This may not be your thing, but a week from Saturday, my store is sponsoring an early winter event for our hockey teams with their families and friends. It involves a hayride with real horses—no tractor for us—ice skating at the rink we use for the teams, and of course plenty of food, including roasted marshmallows and wieners, hot cocoa, and I’m sure a lot more. There won’t be alcohol. I’d love to have you join me. I will have some responsibilities, but I’ll be free most of the night.” He paused and swallowed. “Do you skate? Are you interested? Is that too old-fashioned…hay ride…why am I babbling?”

REVIEW

5 Stars: “Loved it. This was a fun book with a great storyline.  Carol and Cliff had super hot chemistry that made this even better. They made for a steamy story. It’s a definite must read!”

On Tour: London Tales, by Tim Walker @timwalker1666 #ShortStories #HistoricalFiction #London #BlogTour #TheCoffeePotBookClub @timwalker1666 @cathiedunn

November 24, 2023 by Adriana Kraft

BOOK INFORMATION

Book Title: London Tales
Series: Short Stories, Book Two
Author: Tim Walker
Publication Date: 8th November 2023
Publisher: Independently published
Page Length: 203
Audiobook: 3 hours

Genres: short stories; historical fiction; contemporary fiction; dystopian

BLURB:

This collection of eleven tales offers dramatic pinpricks in the rich tapestry of London’s timeline, a city with two thousand years of history. They are glimpses of imagined lives at key moments, starting with a prologue in verse from the point of view of a native Briton tribeswoman absorbing the shock of Roman invasion. The first story is a tense historical adventure set in Roman Londinium in 60 CE from the perspective of terrified legionaries and townsfolk facing the vengeful Iceni queen, Boudica, whose army burnt the fledgling city to the ground.

Further historical dramas take place in 1381 during the Peasant’s Revolt, the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the last ice fair on the frozen Thames in 1814. These are followed by a romance set during the Blitz in 1941, then the swinging Sixties and wide-flared seventies are remembered in the life story of fictional policeman, Brian Smith. Moving on, an East End family get a fright from copycat killings that are a throwback to the 1888 Jack the Ripper murders.

There’s a series of contemporary stories that reference recent events, including the London terrorist bombings of 2005, a literary pub crawl and a daring prison break, building to the imagined death throes of London in a chilling, dystopian vision. These stories are loosely inspired by the author’s personal experiences and reflections on his time living and working in London in the 1980’s and 90’s. Adaptability, resilience, conformity and resolve are recurring themes.

London Tales evokes the city’s rich history and the qualities that were needed by Londoners at various times to survive and prosper – from the base and brutal, devious and inspired, to the refined and civilized.

Available from Amazon in e-book, paperback, Kindle Unlimited and audiobook formats, London Tales is a companion volume to Thames Valley Tales.

Book cover designed by Sean McClean, shows elements from stories.

AUTHOR BIO:

Tim Walker is an independent author living near Windsor in the UK. Although born in Hong Kong in the sixties, he grew up in Liverpool where he began his working life as a trainee reporter on a local newspaper. After attaining a degree in Communication Studies he moved to London where he worked in the newspaper publishing industry for ten years before relocating to Zambia where, following a period of voluntary work with VSO, he set up his own marketing and publishing business. He returned to the UK in 2009.

His creative writing journey began in earnest in 2013, as a therapeutic activity whilst recovering from cancer treatment. He began writing an historical fiction series, A Light in the Dark Ages, in 2014, inspired by a visit to the part-excavated site of former Roman town Calleva Atrebatum at Silchester in Hampshire. The series connects the end of Roman Britain to elements of the Arthurian legend and is inspired by historical source material, presenting an imagined historical fiction of Britain in the fifth and early sixth centuries.

The last book in the series, Arthur, Rex Brittonum, was published in June 2020. This is a re-imagining of the story of King Arthur and follows on from 2019’s Arthur Dux Bellorum. Both titles are Coffee Pot Book Club recommended reads. The series starts with Abandoned (second edition, 2018); followed by Ambrosius: Last of the Romans (2017); and book three, Uther’s Destiny (2018). Series book covers are designed by Canadian graphic artist, Cathy Walker.

Tim has also written two books of short stories, Thames Valley Tales (second edition 2023), London Tales (2023); a book of verse, Perverse (2020); a dystopian thriller, Devil Gate Dawn (2016); and three children’s books, co-authored with his daughter, Cathy – The Adventures of Charly Holmes (2017), Charly & the Superheroes (2018) and Charly in Space (2020).

Tim took early retirement on medical grounds and now divides his time between writing and helping out at a Berkshire-based charity, Men’s Matters.

Publisher: Andaman Press
Page Length: 356

BLURB

A sweeping wartime tale of secrets and love, mystery and redemption, moving from the snow-capped Himalayas to the steamy heat of battle in the Burmese jungle.

Perfect for fans of Dinah Jeffries, Victoria Hislop and Rosie Thomas.

Hampshire, UK, 2015. When Chloe Harper’s beloved grandmother, Lena, dies, a stranger hands her Lena’s wartime diary. Chloe sets out to uncover deep family secrets that Lena guarded to her grave.

Darjeeling, India, 1943, Lena Chatterjee leaves the confines of a strict boarding school to work as assistant to Lieutenant George Harper, an officer in the British Indian Army. She accompanies him to Nepal and deep into the Himalayas to recruit Gurkhas for the failing Burma Campaign. There, she discovers that Lieutenant Harper has a secret, which she vows never to reveal.

In Kathmandu, the prophesy of a mysterious fortune teller sets Lena on a dangerous course. She joins the Women’s Auxiliary Service Burma (the Wasbies), risking her life to follow the man she loves to the front line. What happens there changes the course of her life.

On her quest to uncover her grandmother’s hidden past, Chloe herself encounters mystery and romance. Helped by young Nepalese tour guide, Kiran Rai, she finds history repeating itself when she is swept up in events that spiral out of control…

INSPIRATION FOR
THE FORTUNE TELLER OF KATHMANDU

By Ann Bennett

The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu is the seventh novel in my Echoes of Empire collection, all stories about the Second World War in South-East Asia. The books tell the story of the conflict from the point of view of different characters caught up in the conflict and are mainly set in Singapore, Burma and Malaya (present-day Myanmar and Malaysia). I was first inspired to write about the war in South-East Asia because my father served in Malaya with the British Indian Army and was taken prisoner by the Japanese at the Fall of Singapore in February 1942. He was forced to work on the Thai-Burma railway and remained a prisoner until the end of the war. My first book, Bamboo Heart: A Daughter’s Quest was based on his true story which I only discovered when I found his ‘Liberation Questionnaire’ in the UK National Archives at Kew four decades after his death. My subsequent six books in this series have all been inspired by aspects of the second world war in South-East Asia too.

One of the storylines in The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu was inspired by the little-known history of the Wasbies – The Women’s Auxiliary Service (Burma). Lena, the main character in the book volunteers to join the service in 1943. She wants to do her bit for the war effort and, for reasons I won’t reveal here, is anxious to get closer to the frontline. After an initial period of training at Shillong, a hill station in India, she is sent to the border between India and Burma to join a team of Wasbies where she sees and experiences the danger of the frontline first hand.

I stumbled across the Wasbies’ story when I was doing research for a previous book, The Lake Palace (incidentally part of a different series – The Oriental Lake Collection). The Lake Palace is about a young English woman who volunteers to follow General Slim’s 14th Army as an auxiliary nurse. She is sent into the hills to nurse casualties from the ferocious battle of Kohima on the Burma front. Many lives were lost at Kohima both by the Allies and by the Japanese and the conditions there were truly shocking.

During my research for that book, I came across a photograph of a group of women, operating a mobile canteen out of an old, converted Chevrolet lorry near the battle lines during the Burma campaign.

They served what was known as ‘Char and Wads’ – ie Tea and Cake to troops as well as selling them ‘luxury’ items that the men wouldn’t normally have had access to, such as soap, combs, hair oil, writing paper, shoe polish etc. The presence of the Wasbies near the front was a great boost to morale for the exhausted and battle-weary men who were also suffering in the tropical climate. I realised when I saw that picture that I would like to write about these unsung heroines of the Burma campaign. I set to work to discover as much as I could about them.

To my dismay I found that not a great deal has been written about the Wasbies. My main source of inspiration and information was a fabulous book, Front Line and Fortitude, by EJ Lockhart-Mure. It is the diary of a real-life Wasbie, Maria Pilbrow, a daily account of the trials and tribulations, the frustrations as well as the camaraderie and friendships forged during those testing months and years. The writer was clearly an inspirational woman as were her fellow Wasbies. The hardships they suffered and the trauma they witnessed daily are hard to believe.  To follow that up I also bought another book, a slim volume called Chinthe Women – Women’s Auxiliary Service Burma 1942-1946 – Char and Wads on the frontline. The Chinthe is a mythical Burmese lion, which became the symbol of the Wasbies. This little book contains a wealth of information, first hand accounts, photographs and such fascinating things as ID cards and record books. It was written by Sally and Lucy Jaffe, granddaughters of Major Ninian Taylor, the leader of the Wasbies.

I hope I have done the Wasbies justice in The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu. Of course, the time Lena spends with the Wasbies is only part of a much broader dual-timeline story, which also features the uncovering of a grandmother’s secret past, the discrimination experienced by Eurasians in British India, the recruitment of Gurkha soldiers from remote villages in the Himalayas, the prophesy of a mysterious fortune-teller in Kathmandu, together with natural disasters and of course romance in both timelines. I hope this inspires you to read the book and if you do, I really hope you enjoy it!
