Slamming the door behind him, Jonathan leaned his back against it. In short, hard gasps, he took deep breaths, not realizing he’d been holding onto it until then. Thankfully, the feeling of oppression faded and Jonathan began to relax. He stood there by the door for some time, listening for someone, or something, moving outside. When he heard nothing, he let out a sigh of relief and began to step away. He yelped when he caught sight of a movement, but when he saw his reflection staring back at him, he closed his eyes and let out a sigh to the ceiling. A wet and cold touch caressed the length of his neck.

Jonathan opened his eyes, paralyzed as he watched himself in the mirror. His heart raced faster than before, and he couldn’t breathe. At the same time, the feeling of impending doom swamped over him. His heart beat rapidly in his throat, the sound, deafening in his ears. He was very sure that a man had spoken his name. Jonathan couldn’t recall feeling that frightened in his life. The shower in the bathroom turned off, and he heard Rafe whistling a tune, but instead of calling out to him, Jonathan continued to stare at his lone reflection, unable to understand how the voice had spoken right next to his ear. If he were to reflect on that touch, he could swear it had been a tongue. When the bathroom door opened behind him made him jump, he turned around, fist drawn up to hit whoever it was that was playing pranks on him. Rafe stood in the doorway, bare except for a damp towel around his waist. Jonathan slowly lowered his fist, fighting his rising urge to run like a coward and schooled his features.

I am a wife, mother and blogger by day, a writer by night. It can be difficult, to say the least, but it is a challenge that keeps me on my toes.

I grew up listening to folk tales my father and nannies told either to entertain us children or to send home a message. These narratives I kept with me and finally, I wrote them down in a journal way back when I kept one. Going through junk led to a long forgotten box and in it was the journal. Reading the stories of romance, science fiction and horror I had taken time to put to paper, brought to light that these were tales I never met in my readings.

The tales I write are fictional but all of them are based on what I grew up with and still dream about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for my pleasure. And I hope, yours as well.

Thank you so much for having me on release day, Adriana!

The beginnings of Switching Leads

When I was asked to join the Campus Cravings anthology by the incomparable Cassandra Carr, I hadn’t written in a year. I’ve been plagued first with writer’s block and then an injury to my neck that limits computer time. I couldn’t say no because of the exposure and to be in an anthology with so many of my favorite authors is like a dream come true. So, I decided to somehow suck it up and do my job–write.

However, I needed an idea. I went with the coaches for the Cathia U riding team for many reasons. One, it’s a sport I know since I used to teach two intercollegiate teams in my other life as a riding instructor. I had fiddled with doing lacrosse since my son plays, but it would still be a learning curve. Two, a good friend competed at the intercollegiate level and now is an assistant coach for a team here on the East Coast. Three, I tend to like more mature romances in my reading as well as my writing, so it made sense to go with thirty-something men instead of college-aged boys.

And then I had to overcome writer’s block. That was a little harder, but I simply pushed at getting it done, knowing I had a deadline looming and 8 other authors counting on me to do my part. I called my assistant coach friend and she helped me outline a few plot possibilities so I had a clearer path of where I was going with the story. I also had the assistance of KyAnn Waters and Darah Lace for brainstorming. Without them, Switching Leads wouldn’t have been completed!

Here’s the blurb for Switching Leads

He’s used to taking the reins…for love will he switch leads?

Coach John Graham needs a new assistant for Cathia U’s equestrian team. The last person he expects to get the job walks into the barn and stops his heart. How is he supposed to focus on the team when his ex-lover—sexy horse trainer Finn Parker—wants back into his life…and into his bed?

John shrugged and looked away. “I never believed how you felt about me then. And I’ve been pissed for ten years.”

Finn swallowed, his heart hammering. “Now do you believe I felt that way?” He wasn’t going to ask if John believed he loved him still. Baby steps.

John’s gaze flickered from Finn’s eyes to mouth and back up again in a slow perusal that seared Finn’s skin. “Yeah,” he said hoarsely and leaned across the stool between them. His lips brushed Finn’s surprised ones in a gentle kiss.

He’d dreamed about this for so long—John’s acceptance of his apology—but never had it ended like this, with those firm lips sliding across his as if coaxing belief from the inside.

John withdrew and slid from his stool. He spun Finn’s seat a little and eased between Finn’s thighs, the beginning of an erection pressing against Finn’s zipper. Finn’s cock throbbed at the contact, his belly contracting with anticipation.

“I’m sorry,” John whispered, his pupils dilated, eyes hooded as he stared down into Finn’s eyes. His chest rose and fell rapidly against Finn’s.

“For what?”

“For being unprofessional. I’ve never kissed a co-worker before.” John bent and brushed Finn’s mouth in another kiss, this one a little longer with a touch of heat. Finn didn’t dare open his mouth and beg for tongue. In the past, Finn had ruled their sex life, had directed the kisses. The fact that John had switched leads on him was as heady as a bottle of good bourbon.

“I promise I won’t tell,” Finn murmured when John lifted his lips. John cupped the back of Finn’s head with his palm. “Good.”

About Mia Downing…
Mia Downing started creating heroes at age four, but her heroes back then rode ponies to the rescue and only gave chase kisses on the cheek. Today, Mia’s heroes still rescue those in need, but the price of their toys and the expertise of their seduction leads to a lot
more. When Mia isn’t busy creating new stories for her readers she fills in as an underwear model for a prestigious lingerie company. She also lives in New England with her family, and enjoys horses and knitting.
Fun facts: Mia can juggle poorly, create balloon animals, and face paint. She was the hit entertainment of two family parties. No clown suits were involved.

“No Pouting Party” @Selena_Illyria’s Offerings Yahoo Group

Can’t attend Gay Rom Lit in Albuquerque this year? Yeah, me neither. I’m determined not to pout about that, though, and Selena Illyria (Etopia Press) has volunteered to help keep us smiling by donating time on her Yahoo Group. Authors will share deleted scenes, character interviews, book soundtracks, artwork and more while also conducting giveaways in the loop or on their blogs. It’s a chance for those of us stuck at home to still have some fun with our readers and favorite/new authors of LGBT fiction.

Thursday, October 18 – Sunday, October 21, 2012

Anna Lee (MLR Press), Andrea Speed (Dreamspinner Press), Chris Grover/Christiane France (Amber Quill Press), Tinnean (Dreamspinner Press), Grace R. Duncan (Dreamspinner Press), Shawn Lane (Amber Quill Press), Michael Barnette (Dreamspinner Press), M. C. Hana (Loose Id), Adriana Kraft (Extasy Books), M. L. Rhodes (Amber Quill Press), Andy Dunn (Musa Publishing)…

PLUS ANY AUTHORS READING THIS WHO ALSO CAN’T ATTEND GRL12! You don’t need an invitation or permission to join us and have a little fun.

The group is just shy of 100 members, but they’re a talkative bunch, and readers of all genres are welcome any time.

This is one party I’m not going to miss (and I’m already saving my pennies to get to GRL next year, just so you know!). I’m bringing a special guest – Jennifer Andrews, heroine of my Swinging Games series at eXtasy Books. This is a GLBT party, and Jen, being bi, wants to make sure the B doesn’t get left out of the alphabet soup. Watch for her to reveal all in an up close and personal interview – and maybe she’ll give you a sneak peek at an upcoming scene, too!
