You’re never too old to learn a new trick!

I’m retired. What do I do now?

A lot of people get bored and go back to work. Initially, I played spider solitaire for hours, much to my wife’s disgust. She challenged me to do something useful—how about writing a story since you’re not tackling my honey-do list?

Why not?

One minor issue, I’m awful at English and eons ago only managed to scrape through school with a bare pass. At work, I struggled to use Word, especially with longer reports and merging input from contributors. Different styles are a nightmare. Software has evolved and after an internet search, I decided to try Scrivener, a tool for writers. Thirty minutes later, the software was downloaded and installed. After one or two trial runs, I felt comfortable to start writing.

What to write?

When I was younger, my favorite authors were Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and of course Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, who pioneered the scifi genre. Along the way, I discovered Ray Bradbury, Roger Heinlein, a touch of comedy with Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, and many more great authors.
Could I compete? Probably not, but I’m writing for me.
What genre? I felt more comfortable with paranormal scifi and decided to start there…with one difference. I wanted the story to be racy.

It took me three months to write Alex, a 40,000-word novella. The story wrote itself. The characters took over, and I wanted to continue writing to find out what would happen! Needless to say, I didn’t do an outline.

What do we do now, self-publish or follow a more traditional approach? Money is tight. I decided to follow the tried and true path and look for a publisher. My wife didn’t like Alex, but my euphoria at actually finishing a story won out. Looking back, I should have listened. Back then, I didn’t have any idea of the difference between show and tell. Trigger words…what are they?

How I found a publisher is a topic worthy of a separate blog.

I’m still learning. After a lull of twenty years, I’m reading again. This time not just science fiction but multiple genres, and I read articles on how to write—they’re fascinating. I have a technique that works for me. I write quickly, still with no outline. The characters know what to do. I then put the draft to one side and leave it. I have a couple that have been waiting for a year. I then read them. They’re fresh, but I have an advantage over a reader. What I don’t like, I can change or build upon. The engineer in me writes the summary version first. The second time, I add atmosphere.

For me, this is step one of the edit process. Step two is compile the Scrivener file into Word, re-read, check hyphens, similar words, over-usage of phrases and words. It’s at this time you need a beta reader. I’m lucky, my wife reads them. Depending on what she says, the story could go from a total rewrite, fleshing out areas, correcting storyline flaws, or a final pass through prior to submission.

So…if you’re wondering what to do, or sitting watching the TV…remember, you’re never too old to learn a new trick.

Go for it. I’ve fifteen, and counting, published titles.

About the Author:

Candi Fox, co-host of the wildly popular radio show Candi and Company with over 900 thousand listeners began her venture in the paranormal at the tender age of two, when she witnessed her first apparition. From that moment on the paranormal seemed to follow her. No matter where she moved, the house she lived in the house next door, or the house down the street always seemed to be haunted.

She often wondered if she drew the spirits to her. Little did she know that she was indeed a magnet of sorts. It wasn’t until she was in her late twenties that she found people who could not only explain her gifts, but would also help her hone them. Armed with this new knowledge she began to openly explore hauntings and other paranormal phenomena.

Growing up in Indiana lent her the opportunity to explore many famous haunted places including the Hannah House, which was once part of the Underground Railroad. A little over two years ago she moved to Tulsa, OK and has began to explore the haunted landscape in a new state.

Candi lives with her husband, and furry children in Tulsa. She is passionate about the occult, saving and rehabilitating horses, horseback riding, magic, all things mystical and has her Reiki Mastery.

She uses her own paranormal experiences as well as her own life traumas to write from a grounded and realistic perspective about subjects that are hard to talk about and even harder to feel for yourself.

Sexy? She has no clue! #MySexySaturday #MSS173 #MFRWAuthor

Welcome to week 173 of My Sexy Saturday!

This Week’s theme is Sexy Becomes Her.

Willow Smoke is Book Three in our Riders Up romantic suspense series, set in the horse racing industry. It’s a May-September romance featuring the street kid from Cassie’s Chicago group home in Book One, Cassie’s Hope. But Daisy’s grown up now and works for a horse trainer at Hawthorne Racetrack…

Nicholas Underwood sat staring at the cell phone long after he’d set it on the massive oak desk at the center of his study in his fourteen room Kenwood house. The woman stuck to his hide like a sandbur. Sultry described her voice. She probably didn’t have a clue how sexy she sounded or looked.

He leaned back in his swivel chair and propped his feet on the desk. She had to be his employee. It was safer that way. But she might be right. He hired Sam Gallagher, and Sam hired Daisy Matthews. So what did that make Willow to him? One could probably cut it either way.

Who was he kidding? He didn’t want to regard the tall, willowy woman with the deep smoky voice as an employee. He closed his eyes. Twenty-five from forty-two equals seventeen. Shit. He slammed his feet back to the carpet and strolled over to one of the floor-to-ceiling bookcases that nearly ringed his study. He reached for a slim volume and turned the pages until words leapt out at him. Let the world slip: we shall ne’er be younger. It was from Taming of the Shrew.

Would that he could. What he really wished was that he could forget how Daisy Matthews’ soft breasts crushed against his chest or how her gray eyes rounded in pools of pain and then turned iridescent in the delight of banter and the unexpectedness of surprise. She exuded a vitality that he found intoxicating and difficult to shake.

If he was a smart man, he’d go to the Twin Cities, conduct his business and arrange for the sale of that damn horse while out of town. But that would be too much like the coward’s way out. No, he’d stay the course. He wasn’t about to cheat destiny. Certainly a man of his experience and talent could best a woman who’d probably lived no more than a quarter century.

But why even bother to enter the contest? He could simply flee. No one was watching.

He could no more flee than sprout wings. There was something about Daisy Matthews that drew him like the sorrowful call of the loon. He wanted to know more about her. He wanted to listen to her story. He wanted to have some excuse to hug her again. Given her youthfulness, she might not be good for his pride, but she seemed good for his soul.

When the chips are down, there’s nobody there.  Willowy blond Daisy Matthews has survived the Chicago streets with this mantra but is unprepared for the much older Nick Underwood’s urgent pursuit.  The wealthy businessman receives a thoroughbred in payment for a bad debt and is thrust into Daisy’s world.  She teaches him about horse racing; he teaches her about love.  When Daisy’s seamy brother-in-law threatens Nick’s safety, she doggedly tries to stop him by herself, but flees to the familiar streets when he attacks. Can Nick find her in time – and if he does, will she still want him?

“Suspenseful, intriguing and truly romantic! What a fabulous story of the blending of two worlds” Risha C, Goodreads Reviewer
