Excerpt

“Come on in.” Hunter called from his spot sprawled on the floor in front of his sofa.

Chelsea walked into the living room. “Hey.”

He nodded, grabbed the remote and muted the television.

Chelsea spun a kitchen chair around and sat on it. “Okay, the silence’s killing me. I’ll start with some lame conversation and you just leap in. How was the bio midterm?”

“Passed it. Should write all my exams with a hangover.”

She tapped her fingernail on her thigh. “Guess that was the end of the conversation starters.”

Hunter levelled a glare at her. “What do you want, Chelsea?”

“I want you to sound less angry. I want to talk. I’d like to try and explain. First off, I’m so sorry the cops hauled you in.”

“No.”

“No?” Her voice squeaked.

“Todd was stalking you. The cops had no idea if it was him or me. And from the questions asked, I’d say some pretty weird things’d been happening.”

She shuddered. “I kept thinking I was being paranoid or something. But that’s not why I’m here.”

Hunter slammed a fist on the carpet. “I damn near slept with the coach’s daughter! Why the hell didn’t you tell me?”

Chelsea watched the tiredness in his eyes shift to rage. “Because… because….”

“I wouldn’t date you if I knew who you were.”

“Yea and that’s not fair.” She sat up taller and matched her gaze with his. “It’s not my fault your coach is my dad.”

Hunter closed his eyes and sighed. “I don’t know what to do, Chelsea. My head hurts too damn much to think.”

“Damn it, Hunter, I really like you. I don’t want to lose you as a friend. I don’t want to lose us.”

“I don’t know if there’s going to be an us anymore.” He rubbed his temples.

Chelsea sat behind him on the sofa, slipped her hands under his and began massaging his head.

Hunter pushed her hands away. Although it hurt him to say it, he said, “Go home, Chels. I need time to think.”

He refused to look at her. He couldn’t. He knew he’d give in, wrap his arms around her and beg her to stay.

Victoria Adams - A Guy and a Girl

A Bit about Victoria Adams

I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband and pets. Daughter’s grown up and is now teaching. I like to garden, cook and study Raqs Sharqi (Egyptian belly dance). In the summer, cars slow down when they pass my front yard and the passengers gaze at my flower beds. Friends love to be invited over for supper as the meal is going to be good, good for you and nowhere near low-calorie! No dieting allowed at dinner parties. As to belly dancing, find a class and try it. It’s a blast! Age and weight don’t matter. There are many plus size ladies and one 74 yr old grandmother in one of my classes.

I’ve been writing since I was little. Being an only child, long car rides were filled with making up stories in my head about the people I saw out the car window. I wrote my first full manuscript in tenth grade. When my daughter was younger, I made up stories that she suggested. I’d say – Once upon a time there was a…. She’d shout an answer – chicken! And the story went from there. Great creativity exercise as it turns out. Now, my writing style has taken a split to contemporary romance for adults and contemporary romance for new adults.

Willow-Smoke-eBook-webDaisy’s Summer Fling?

Daisy Matthews isn’t looking for love. She just wants to lose her virginity before her twenty-first birthday. She thinks Nick Underwood will fill the bill perfectly – he’s older, gentle, experienced, and from an entirely different world, so he’s “safe.” He’ll never even think of anything longer term with someone from the wrong side of the tracks who’s half his age.

But fate (and fiction writers :) ) have a way of messing with the best laid plans. Here’s a snippet from just after their first time having sex:

EXERPT

“You make it sound like this is a one night stand,” Nick said.

Daisy stiffened under his gaze. “It is, isn’t it?”

Nick frowned at her. She’d taken a huge risk coming to him, but she’d had no idea how desirable he really found her. She’d gotten him to deflower her. Was that all she wanted? Was that all she thought she deserved?

He gave her his most wicked grin. “You think you’ll learn all there is about sex in one night?”

“Of course not.”

He propped himself up on an elbow and looked at her, memorizing every curve and nuance of her lusciousness. He stroked the inside of her thigh. She moaned. Brushing her trim curls, he said, “Maybe we could be lovers for a while.”

Her muscles tightened and he sensed her withdraw. “I don’t know much about love, and I’m not sure I want to,” she said, her voice thick with emotion.

“But you want to know more about sex.”

She nodded.

He’d have to treat her as gingerly as she treated an injured horse. “Okay, well, if I’m a passable teacher…” He waited for a response.

BLURB

When the chips are down, there’s nobody there. Willowy blond Daisy Matthews has survived the Chicago streets with this mantra but is unprepared for the much older Nick Underwood’s urgent pursuit. The wealthy businessman receives a thoroughbred in payment for a bad debt and is thrust into Daisy’s world. She teaches him about horse racing; he teaches her about love. When Daisy’s seamy brother-in-law threatens Nick’s safety, she doggedly tries to stop him by herself, but flees to the familiar streets when he attacks. Can Nick find her in time – and if he does, will she still want him?

Cover Reveal and Book Hook: Willow Smoke #MFRWHooks

Willow-Smoke-eBook-webWe love our new cover by Rebecca Poole of Dreams2Media! We think she nailed the wary but stunning Daisy Matthews, the wealthy, quizzical and confident Nick Underwood, and of course the chestnut thoroughbred at the center of the story, RainbowBlaze.

Here are the first seven sentences – it’s Book Hooks Wednesday, so be sure to click on the links at the end to travel to the other authors!

EXCERPT

“I won’t let anything hurt you.” Daisy Matthews finished wrapping the ankles of the chestnut mare and sat back on her haunches to evaluate her work. The mare’s ankles were cooler than they had been two hours earlier.

It wasn’t easy to convince a horse to stand in buckets of ice, but after three years of being a groom and an exercise rider, she could do it about as well as anybody at Arlington Park. At least that was what her boss said when he promoted her to assistant trainer.

Daisy grinned. There wasn’t much prestige associated with being an assistant trainer for a fellow with a string of only twenty-some claimers and allowance horses, but it was something, particularly for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks.

RainbowBlaze took a step forward. “I know.” Daisy groaned. “Step one: pay attention. Sorry, I got lost daydreaming. You’re right. Taking care of you is an important job.” She chuckled. “I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing.”

“Hey kid, do you always talk to horses?”

The horse reared and pawed. “It’s okay, girl.” Daisy kept her voice soft and ran her hand slowly along the mare’s neck.

When the mare had stopped trembling, Daisy stepped out of the stall, shaded her eyes from the sun and faced the interloper. She scowled at the man’s new sneakers, monogrammed shirt and neatly pressed slacks. He looked liked he’d be more at home on a sailboat than in a barn.
