Willow Smoke (Riders Up, Book Three)
Sometimes you can’t help pouring what you love into the fiction you write. “Willow Smoke” might not seem to be much of a name for a romantic suspense book, but it carries great meaning, for us and for its characters. We loved the diamond willows that grew in our spruce-tamarack marsh when we lived in the north woods, and Mr. Kraft’s writing space still sports a small piece he carved.
We had no idea when we began this book what its name would be. We’d already “met” its heroine – Daisy is the street waif Cassie rescues in Book One, Cassie’s Hope, now grown and working as an apprentice horse trainer. As we delved into our forty-ish hero’s reaction on first meeting her, we found Nick thunderstruck by her lanky, graceful willowy frame. He nicknames her “Willow.” Her smoky eyes gave us the rest of the title.
Having struck it huge in the stock market, Nick spends his time doing what he loves – working with wood, crafting hand-built canoes. He grew up canoeing Minnesota’s north woods lakes, so it was only natural for him to take Daisy there and share the things he loves – we love – about it. If I say too much more about the diamond willow walking stick he teaches Daisy to carve, I’d be giving away the plot – but the role of “willow” in this book comes full circle. You never know when you start writing how pivotal a tiny detail will turn out to be!
To celebrate the upcoming Kentucky Derby, Willow Smoke will be free at Amazon this weekend, starting Friday April 27!
Of course, it’s always free to read at Kindle Unlimited.
When the chips are down, there’s nobody there. Willowy blond Daisy Matthews has survived the Chicago streets with this mantra but is unprepared for the much older Nick Underwood’s urgent pursuit. The wealthy businessman receives a thoroughbred in payment for a bad debt and is thrust into Daisy’s world. She teaches him about horse racing; he teaches her about love. When Daisy’s seamy brother-in-law threatens Nick’s safety, she doggedly tries to stop him by herself, but flees to the familiar streets when he attacks. Can Nick find her in time – and if he does, will she still want him?
